I usually try to do a better job of spacing out my reviews of products from the same manufacturers, but since PR* Bar is so obviously a sponsor of the United States Olympic team, I had to manage to squeeze in another review during the time when the Olympics were going on so that I could get some "free" publicity or at least think of an easy way to tie-in an intro to a review. Anyway, like the last bar, I picked up this PR* Bar Apple Pie Bar at Meijer for $1.25. It comes in at 1.76 ounces and has 200 calories with fifteen grams of protein. It's also all natural and gluten free, so it keeps our Olympians healthy. Based on the taste of the last bar, I'm hoping that this one at least keeps our Olympians from going hungry because the last review I did of these was AWFUL and I wouldn't have recommended that anyone eat it.
I've got to admit that when I first took this out of the wrapper, I was entirely shocked by what I saw because I did not expect the "icing" to be covering this bar at all. I'm not entirely sure what I expected, but I certainly did not expect it to look like this. Anyway, as I've already mentioned, the exterior bar is covered in a ghost white vanilla layer and then within that layer is the typical protein mix that included tiny bits of rice crisps. When I smelled the protein mix itself, it permeated strongly of cinnamon and apple smell and that was quite a pleasing scent. The protein mix at least carried the appearance of looking like the crust of an apple pie too (it was somewhat flaky like a pie crust), so if you ate this with your eyes, I think you'd be very happy.
As we all know though, you don't entirely eat with your eyes, so when I took my first bite, I was met with a bar that did taste very similar to an apple pie. The cinnamon mix was both flaky and doughy at the same time and honestly, it was a pretty solid re-creation of a pie itself. The protein mix also carried a strong apple flavoring that was met by an incredibly strong taste of cinnamon. So strong in fact that I would consider the cinnamon flavor to be "heat" and actually bring some spice to the bar. I love cinnamon and can usually take it in absurd amounts, but this bar bordered on having too much. One thing that helped this heat factor though was the vanilla "icing" layer which added a cooling component to the bar itself that tuned down the heat of the cinnamon and its presence was definitely appreciated. If you don't like cinnamon or are scared of a little heat, this might not be for you though.
Buy It or Fly By It? After the performance of PR* Bar in my last review, I was very apprehensive about tasting this one, but this bar itself happily took away all that apprehension and put out a nice, solid taste, so I give this a BUY IT rating. It's a reasonable enough approximation of an apple pie in bar form and if you can do that, you've got a winner. As opposed to the Chocolate Peanut Bar from last time, I hope our Olympians are eating a lot of this Apple Pie Bar, because if they are, they are going to be happy and full and that will hopefully lead to great results.
