Superfoods, superfruits, Superman...oh wait...one of those doesn't belong. Anyway, perhaps I've been living in a closet my entire life, but it seems like this whole "super" explosion as it refers to foods has been a semi-recent development in food marketing that has been trending over the past few years. Blueberries, pomegranates, etc., it seems like all of them have been given new life as not only food but also as SUPERfoods and that amuses me. Anyway, it was time for me to have another superfood and another Bora Bora product as I dive into this review of the Bora Bora Wild Pomegranate Pecan Superfood bar. I picked this one up at Meijer for $0.75 and it is 1.4 ounces with 140 calories and two grams of protein.
The clear packaging pretty much gives everything away about this bar, but I'll describe it anyway because the packaging hides one thing about the bar: it is extremely stick and when I reviewed the ingredient list, I used my SUPER powers of deduction (and my ability to read ingredient lists) to see that was caused by an overabundance of the typical brown rice syrups that are often used to hold these bars together. Also in the mix of the bar were HUGE cherry pieces, very large pecans and cashew pieces and also medium sized raisins. One thing missing was pomegranates and when reviewing that ingredient list again, I came to find out that there aren't actually any pomegranates in this bar. It's just pomegranate juice extract. Odd. Anyway, the rest of the bar is the typical rice crisp mix that you'd see in any of these.
As far as taste, the enormous cherries took over the taste of the entire bar as they added a strong sweetness and tangy to each bite. Also helping along that sweetness was the raisins. Adding a somewhat salty, although not really that strong component, was the pecans and cashews and when you encountered them, they added a nice hard crunch to what was a particularly airy rice crisp mix. Had those nuts not been in there, there very well might not have been anything to this bar. As it was though, this was a very sweet bar with an occasional crunch.
Buy It or Fly By It? I don't mind things that are very sweet, so I say BUY IT. That said, if you don't like sweets or don't feel like eating anything sweet at that particular moment, stay away from this bar because it is one sweet bomb that is going to overtake you. Also, what I found particularly odd about this bar and I mentioned it already is that they named this bar after pomegranates and the only pomegranate in here is juice extract. One would think, especially based on the size and strength of taste, that Bora Bora would have found a way to incorporate the cherry component into the name of the bar, but I guess not. Oh well, what do I know...I'm just a dumb food blogger.
