Review: Quaker Big Chewy Sweet & Salty Chocolate & Salted Caramel Granola Bars

Hey, hey!!  Another new Quaker Chewy product!  I hadn't reviewed one of these for a long, long time, so I'm glad Chewy bars can make it back to the blog, albeit in the Big Chewy form.  I picked up a box of six of these Quaker Big Chewy Sweet & Salty Chocolate & Salted Caramel Granola Bars on sale at Meijer for $2.00 and each bar in the box weighs in at 1.41 ounces (it's 60% bigger!) with a robust 170 calories.  I guess it is a BIG Chewy bar after all, so that calorie count shouldn't surprise me.

Being that Chewy bars are a proven recipe for success, it should come as no shock that the standard Quaker oat and granola mix is the base of the bar.  Within that mix are small chunks of pretzels and also chocolate chips, thereby bringing the sweet, salty and chocolate components to the bar.  The salted caramel component is then brought by the base of the bar and then the salted caramel swirl on top of the bar.  That caramel smell definitely was more of the burnt caramel variety, which I guess shouldn't be surprising since it was a salted caramel.

Biting into this, I was immediately met by the melting qualities of the salted caramel which coated the named chewy granola mix.  The pretzel pieces in that mix brought some airy crunch and then the chocolate chips brought along some sweetness and additional melting qualities.  The caramel flavor, while flat, was somewhat salty as advertised, so having the sweetness of the chocolate chips mixed in definitely helped this from an overall perspective.  All in all, this was exactly what it advertised in that it was sweet and salty and also had chocolate and caramel flavor, all mixed with standard Quaker granola.  There will be no product mis-representation lawsuits brought as a result of this!

Buy It or Fly By It?  Like most Quaker Chewy bars, this one delivers as you would expect it to, meaning that it is not the greatest thing in the world, but it is still tasty.  For that reason, this bar receives a BUY IT rating in my book.  It's a bulky and tasty snack that's worth your time (and purchase) if you see a box of these in the store.
