Review: Smartfood Feta Herb Hummus Popped Chips

With this final review of my Kroger clearance section binge, I'll touch on the one chip that I found to have the most interesting flavor combination of the three in this small 0.8 ounce sized bag of Smartfood Feta Herb Hummus Popped Chips that I picked up at half price.  Normal price is $1.00 and each bag has 110 calories of garbanzo bean based fun.  As I've said in previous Smartfood reviews, hummus can sometimes be a controversial food because a lot of people really, really do not like it.  I am not one of those people and I'm honestly intrigued by it.  Plus, I think hummus based popped chips serve as a good base because since hummus is such a neutral flavor, it's a great base to really showcase other flavor combinations and that's what it'll be trying to do here.

I love it when bags advertises "spices" in their ingredient list on the bag of the bag because that is such an all encompassing word that could mean so many different things.  In the case of this bag of popped chips, I'll just touch on some of the familiar ones as these chips include salt, black pepper, basil, rosemary, tomato powder, toasted garlic powder, onion powder, brown sugar and a host of others.  A lot of those, like the black pepper and basil are clearly visible in the dusting on the chips.  Being that feta is also listed in the name of the product, this includes feta cheese along with cheddar cheese and those present themselves as a sort of oily spray-on coating on the chips with a white tint to them because of the feta cheese.  Aromatically, all of the ingredients are battling with each other to bring something that smells especially herbaceous and also salty, so it really did carry that lively smell of a lot of Mediterranean foods.

When I took my first chip in for a bite, I could clearly taste the saltiness of the feta cheese and I'm sure that flavor was accelerated due to the salt in the mix.  Then I was hit with a broad array of spices, but most noticeably the garlic, onion and basil that provided a liveliness and bite to counteract the saltiness of the feta cheese.  A slight hint of black pepper was then present to provide the entire package with a bit of "spicy" aftertaste.  One other key thing that I noticed was that I could actually taste a bit of the neutral flavored hummus in this chip, which is something that I could not say about the last time that I had one of these chips.  Since I could clearly taste the feta, herbs and hummus with each chip, it's fair to say that this delivered in every aspect that it promised.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Being that this delivered as promised and also made for a lively and tasty treat that I enjoyed, I've got to give this a BUY IT rating.  This obviously isn't a classic flavor that would compare to a normal potato chip, but it is something different that I think a lot of people would find enjoying if they are willing to step outside the proverbial box for a small adventure.  In my mind, that would be smart and apologize for that horrible joke.

BUY IT!!
