Review: Nature's Bakery Stone Ground Whole Wheat Blueberry Fig Bar

If you check the archives of this site, and I'm not quite sure anyone would be bored enough to do that, you will see that I've been to Nature's Bakery before.  I saw recently that my local Meijer had added another flavor to their offerings, so I picked up this Nature's Bakery Stone Ground Whole Wheat Blueberry Fig Bar twin pack on sale for $1.25.  Being that it's a twin pack, it has two bars in it and each bar checks in at 1.0 ounces.  Each bar also has 100 calories and two grams of protein as well.  For those of you that are afraid of your own shadow (or just really healthy people), it's also cholesterol free, dairy free and kosher.

As you can see, there are two different bars that I've stacked on top of each other for the picture above.  Each bar is the standard whole wheat baked outside and is filled with the fig/fruit filling of choice.  In this case, that fruit filling is blueberries and there is an extremely mild hint of blueberries in the smell.  What is also in that mix is apple powder (HUH?!) and red cabbage extract for color.  Yep, red cabbage extract.  I know that is used in red velvet cakes sometimes, so it's not that out of the ordinary for it to be used as a food coloring, but still seems bizarre to me to see that in an ingredient list.  Anyway, other than that, the exterior bar was typically soft and there's not really much else to say here.

In terms of the flavor, there's not a whole lot to say either.  The exterior of the bar provided a soft and chewy characteristic and the interior filling added some sweetness and gooeyness to the bar, while also maintaining a grainy texture like a typical fig filling would do.  The exterior carried that wheat bread taste as well, so that was also not a surprise As for the blueberry flavor, I can't say I really tasted it.  There was a mild hit of sweetness that I guess could be attributed to the blueberries, but there was nothing there that I could absolutely say, "yep, that's it" to.  Honestly, I was fairly bored by this bar.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Despite the fact that I was bored by it, it was still an edible and mildly satisfying snack, so I'll go ahead and give it a BUY IT rating.  It's basically just an oversized Fig Netwon with a hint of blueberry flavor and a healthy does of "health", but that's about it.  Nothing else about this bar stands out, but sometimes the need arises for something plain to fulfill a hunger pang and this twin pack would fit that role perfectly.

BUY IT!!
