I've shared the fact that I'm addicted to JELL-O pudding in the plethora of prior reviews here on the blog. On the other hand, I'm not so addicted to their Temptations products and those have been kind of hit or miss in my book. Seeing a new (to me) flavor of the Temptations line in the store recently prompted me to pick up this four pack of JELL-O Temptations Key Lime Pudding that was on sale at Kroger for $2.49. Each pudding cup is four ounces and also 80 calories. Now, I'll be the first to admit that while I find Key Lime Pie to be alright, it's not one of my favorite things in the world, but I'm almost always willing to try out new things because sometimes thing surprise me with how good then end up being. Hopefully that'll be the case with this pudding cup.
Temptations recently switched their packaging in two ways. First, they went to four packs like all the other JELL-O products. Second, they went to clear plastic containers as opposed to black plastic containers like they used to have. Again, this is just like all the other JELL-O pudding snacks out there. The only reason I bring up this packaging change because these Temptations products used to be a mystery, but now since they are in clear plastic, it's pretty obvious what you are going to get as you can see above. This cup was made up of the base of Key Lime pudding and then topped with a meringue pudding. Both had the texture of mousse and carried a strong and surprisingly fresh smell of lime. Ah, the miracles of modern science in creating the smell of a "fresh" lime. Gotta love it.
My first shot at this was to taste the meringue topping and it was pretty much as I expected. It was pretty tame in flavor and tasted almost like nothing. I guess I could say it was "eggy" in its flavor, but that might be giving it a bit too much credit. Next to taste was the key lime pudding and all I can say was that this was a lot of lime. It was especially tart and I was once again hit by that "fresh" lime flavor that I had already smelled. If this were just a cup of lime pudding, this would be an automatic turnoff because this was too much lime, in my opinion. Luckily, it wasn't a lime pudding cup and it did have the meringue in it as well. When I mixed the two together, the meringue did a good job of taming the tartness of the lime and actually making this a more palatable flavor. It still had that tang that I had already tasted, but the fact that it was muted helped quite a bit. All in all, this really did taste like the pie.
Buy It or Fly By It? This had good flavor and like I said, did resemble the pie that it intended to, so it gets a BUY IT rating. It's not my personal cup of tea and is not something that I'll be buying frequently because I'm not a key lime pie guy, but don't let my personal tastes deter you from trying this one out if you see it at the store and/or are a fan of key lime pie. It's a more than reasonable approximation that I think most people would enjoy.
