Review: Hunt's Snack Pack Bakery Shop Lemon Meringue Pie Pudding

These Bakery Shop pudding cups are a funny premise.  To me, it seems like they are just putting lipstick on a pig.  What I mean by that is that they are taking their basic products and then just putting a pretty name on them to make them seem different.  In prior reviews, it just seems like they are mixing two different kinds of pudding and then calling it an exotic name and that's the whole premise of the pudding cup.  That's been fine in some cases since it has been tasty, but it is an interesting way of re-purposing existing products...basically it's the Taco Bell approach.  With that, it's time to review another one of these Bakery Shop pudding cups with this review of the Hunt's Snack Pack Bakery Shop Lemon Meringue Pie Pudding that I picked up at Meijer in a four pack for $1.00.  It's 3.5 ounces and 120 calories per pudding cup.

As you can see, they've done a pretty good job disguising this one as a lemon meringue pie, as the name would imply.  The base of the cup is a lemon pudding and then the top of the cup is a meringue pudding.  Pretty fancy.  The only thing missing is the pie crust, but since this is a pudding cup, that is to be expected.  The pudding cup itself smells strong of lemon and that's just about it as there's nothing else worth documenting here.

In terms of the taste, it's all lemon too.  I tried tasting the meringue pudding separately, but all I got was lemon flavor.  Granted, it was a milder lemon flavor, but it was lemon flavor nonetheless.  As for the lemon pudding, it had that tart lemon taste, but it wasn't overpowering at all.  In fact, I found the lemon taste to be generally pleasing and being that I've had lemon puddings before that have just been too much, the fact that this one was pleasing was a welcome surprise to me.  Mixed together, these two tasted like lemon and as I'm sure you guessed from my descriptions of the puddings separately, that could have been expected.  One thing the meringue pudding did do though was make this slightly more creamy, much like a meringue in the namesake pie would do.  That was nice.

Buy It or Fly By It?  If you like lemon pudding, you will like this one.  I'm not a big lemon pudding guy, but the fact that I can get a four pack of these for $1.00 at regular price at my local Meijer makes me give this a BUY IT rating.  It's a nice change of pace from the typical chocolate, vanilla and caramel puddings that I eat, so it's good for an occasional treat.

BUY IT!!

  1. Did you ever try the "Blueberry Muffin" or "Cinnamon Roll" Hunt's Snack Pack varieties? (They discontinued them when they same out with this "Bakery Shop" line.) THOSE were unique. The Cinnamon Roll flavor wasn't just vanilla pudding with cinnamon in it; it actually tasted like a cinnamon roll. And the Blueberry Muffin variety somehow had the flavor of actual muffin batter, not just "vanilla and blueberry flavor". It was kind of scary how much it really tasted like a muffin...

This "Bakery Shop" line, however, seems to be anything but unique... mostly just standard pudding flavors with new names. Yes, they still taste good, but why are they settling for making these products when they've already shown that they COULD actually duplicate the flavors of bakery treats if they really wanted to?
