Review: Quaker Chewy Dipps Dark Chocolatey Granola Bar

For the longest time in my life, I could have gone with or without eating chocolate.  I mean, chocolate was okay and I would eat it when it was by me, but I had no particular passion for it and never really actively sought it out.  That said, my sister's boyfriend once told me that he heard that people's taste change every seven years, so perhaps that's what's happened to me since I crave chocolate 24 hours a day now and go out of my way to seek it out.  Strange.  One thing I've always loved, no matter what time in my life, is granola and when Quaker mixes their standard granola Chewy bars with chocolate, or dark chocolate in this case, I'm immediately intrigued even though I'm not the world's biggest dark chocolate fan.  Still, I stayed away from this Quaker Chewy Dipps Dark Chocolatey Granola Bar for the longest time and went with the other Dipps bars because their names just sounded "sexier" in my mind.  After making my way through the product line in prior reviews, I finally decided it was time to review this one that I picked up in a box of six on sale at Meijer for $2.00.  Each bar is 1.09 ounces and 140 calories.

With what I deemed to be an un-sexy product name, I expected an un-sexy product design/construction and in that respect, I was correct.  This bar was just Quaker's standard Chewy bar granola mix with some semisweet chocolate chips mixed in.  The bar was then encased in a thick layer of dark chocolate that surprisingly did not smell foul like regular dark chocolate (my experience) but instead more like a sweet chocolate.  Having expected to be turned off by the smell going into this, I was actual turned on by that smell (we'll just continue the sexual overtones for the rest of this post since I've taken them to the point of no return).

Biting into this bar was not orgasmic like chocolate can sometimes be, but instead it did provide a bit of unexpected euphoria.  The dark chocolate, while noticeably dark chocolate, carried more of a sweet flavor that typical dark chocolate and that mysterious stranger flavor was something that was certainly not unwelcome.  In fact, I laid back and enjoyed it as the thick chocolate coated my throat and provided a wonderfully pleasant chocolate taste.  The rest of the bar was pretty much the standard Chewy Chocolate Chip bar, but at least the dark chocolate component of this bar was enough like "real" chocolate that it made a flavorful bar for me.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Certainly not my first choice in the Dipps product line, but this bar would definitely not be my last choice either.  It gets a BUY IT rating based on its surprisingly tasty and unexpected flavor profile and after the first bar, I'm anxious to finish the entire box.  That's a shock to me because I expected this box to last pretty much forever because I'd dread eating the dark chocolate, but instead, I'm not sure this box will make it through the rest of the week.

BUY IT!!
