Review: CLIF Black Cherry Almond Bar

I've done countless CLIF Bar reviews on this blog.  Some have been good, some have been bad and others have been just bland.  My perhaps foolish attempt to try as many flavors of bars as are available leads me to the CLIF Black Cherry Almond flavor variety of CLIF's standard energy bars.  I picked this one up at Meijer for $1.09 and it comes in with typical CLIF measurements:  2.4 ounces, 240 calories and ten grams of protein.  Being that cherry and almond are two of my more liked flavors, I was curious to give this one a shot and see how well it fared.

Along with the measurements and caloric data, most CLIF bars look mostly the same as well.  This bar is made up of CLIF's standard CLIFPro mix that includes oats and soybeans along with whatever mix-ins constitute the flavor of the bar.  In this case, it is decent sized dried black cherries and fairly large almonds.  Being that the mix-ins had nice sizes to them, I was anxious to see how this bar tasted since I figured those flavors would be stars of the show and make this an excellent bar.

Unfortunately, may anxiousness led to disappointment as this bar was just bland.  The CLIFPro mix was soft and chewy and tasted exactly like all the other CLIF bars out there, but the cherries and almonds really didn't do much for the bar.  The almonds were pretty much as you'd expect them to be with a fairly bland flavor with a nice crunch, but I wasn't expecting them to bring a lot of flavor, per se, to the bar.  I was just expecting crunch.  Where I was expecting flavor was from the dried black cherries and they really didn't bring much of that at all.  There was a very slight sweet tang at the very end of the taste if you concentrated to find it, but if you are going to list something with black cherries as your primary ingredient, wouldn't you want it to be the star of the show?  I know I would and that's where CLIF failed on this one.  Really, the only thing I truly tasted in this entire bar was oats.

Buy It or Fly By It?  It wasn't a bad bar and it is edible, but it just didn't deliver on the flavors that it promised so it gets a FLY BY IT rating.  I wish it had delivered because it was a good bar in concept, but unfortunately it just couldn't do that.  Heck, this could have been any other flavor of CLIF Bar out there and I wouldn't have known the difference because it was so boring.

FLY BY IT!!

  2. I disagree. Black cherry almond was my FAVORITE snack and I'm so upset they no longer make this flavor :( To the black market I go...
