Every now and then, I need some energy. Actually, it's more than every now and then, it's seemingly all the time. Because of that I'm always looking for ways to give myself a pick-me-up and often times that involves caffeine products because most food products out there just have too many calories, like some other PowerBar products I've reviewed, and I don't want to add that to my daily intake. So, when I saw this PowerBar Pure & Simple Energy Cranberry Oatmeal Cookie Energy Bar at Meijer for $0.89 and the fact that it was only 130 calories with five grams of protein, I was intrigued. It's also 1.23 ounces, so it's about one and a half times the size of a standard Quaker Chewy bar. It's also 100% natural and is a great source of fiber, in case you were interested as well.
Ripping open the packaging and taking a look at this one, it clearly was exactly what the label promised. There were large and visible dried cranberries spread throughout the bar and the oat grains were also very visible in the energy mix. Not quite sure where the cookie component comes into this since I didn't notice any particularly cookie-looking pieces in the mix, but I'll just take their word for it. By the way, the entire mix was held together with a mix of peanut and almond butters, as they typically are in these bars.
Biting into this, the first thing I noticed was the strong and sweet tang of the cranberries. Cranberries are a close second to raisins on my list of favorite dried fruits, so I certainly appreciated that taste. The oatmeal "cookie" part of the bar was noticeable but as typically happens with oatmeal products, it was fairly bland but you could still taste it. Perhaps it was a good thing that the oatmeal "cookie" part of the bar did not bring any additional sweetness and instead just heartiness because if it was sweet as well, this bar could have been an overpowering sweet teeth rattler. Instead, it was a mildly sweet snack size treat.
Buy It or Fly By It? BUY IT. This certainly didn't bring me a fountain of pure and simple long lasting energy like the wrapper said and it wasn't the best thing I've ever had, but it was a nice, pleasant treat and I was certainly glad I ate it. It's the perfect size to not weight you down and to help you bridge that gap between meals if you are starting to feel your stomach grumble in the middle of the day.
