Review: JELL-O Oreo Pudding Snack

Full disclosure here:  Like Tony from A Sweet Score, I've never been one of those people that thinks Oreos are the best thing in the entire world.  I like them and I appreciate them, so it's not like I hate them, but I feel there are better manufactured cookie options out there than Oreos.  For example, Nutter Butters are better than Oreos.  That said, while I feel that Oreos are somewhat overrated, I was still willing to approach this JELL-O Oreo Pudding Snack review with no biases and explore these to see how they matched up against the real thing (I also had a commenter in my S'mores pudding post give a strong recommendation) and also see if they helped quench my pudding obsession.  I picked up a six pack of these four ounce cups at Meijer on sale for $2.50.  Each pudding snack contains 110 calories.  Also of note is that while the some of my JELL-O reviews have focused on the sugar free options, this one does contain sugar, so there is nothing even remotely healthy about this.

Everything about this pudding snack visually screams Oreo cookie, so at least Oreo has nailed it there.  There is a chocolate base topped by a white "cream" center and then that is topped by another layer of chocolate.  The one thing that they are missing though is that the texture of this is just typical pudding.  There is no layer of crushed cookies or anything like that and that was disappointing.  I guess I should have expected that though since the label clearly states "the taste of Oreo cookies (Artificial Flavor)".

Getting down to the taste, you can definitely spot that this one is artificial Oreo flavor all the way, because frankly, it tastes nothing like the real thing.  It's cool and refreshing like all puddings are, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about this.  What is scary is that the artificial Oreo flavor has a lime-like/acidic aftertaste and I KNOW that Oreo cookies do not have that aftertaste.  They may be entirely manufactured, but they don't manufacture them to taste that way.  Frankly, I found it difficult to finish this tiny pudding cup (of course I did though...there are starving people in the world and I can't waste food!) because the taste was so alarming.

Buy It or Fly By It?  It's rare that I do this for a JELL-O product, but I've definitely got to give this one a FLY BY IT rating .  The acidic aftertaste of this one is such a major turn-off that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, not even to those people that worship at the altar of Oreo cookies.  Too bad, because I was really excited about trying this one too.  Shucks.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. Haha, I like how you used the term "artificial Oreo flavor."

  2. Too bad this one was a failure. However, there's still the simple solution if I want Oreo Pudding; I'll just do what I always do and place some cookies in a plastic baggie, smash the heck out of them and mix them in with my pudding. :D

  5. I'm eating one of these right now and I don't find the acidic aftertaste you mention. However, to me this tastes about the same as their chocolate and vanilla swirl. The only difference was in the color. Very disappointing.

  6. You need to update your pics. Kraft has stopped making 6-packs and switched to 4-packs. In the process, the price (allowing for the 6 to 4 change) has increased by over 34%. Nice going Kraft. I'm not that stupid. You just lost a consumer family.

  7. I have already eaten two of these today and will fight with all of my being to not eat another one later tonight. I am ADDICTED to Oreo Jello Pudding snacks. I do not taste the acidic aftertaste you mentioned at all. These pudding cups are to die for. They are similar to the chocolate/vanilla swirl but there is a difference to me. The chocolate in the Oreo pudding is thicker and better in my opinion. I really think it's to each their own on these and pretty much all edible things in general, but personally, they absolutely quench my craving for smooth chocolatey-vanilla Oreo goodness. Are they good for you? Of course not. But at 1.5g fat and 110 calories (and 18g of sugar) they are certainly better than eating a stack of Oreos!

  9. OMG I'm so glad I found this. I thought I was going crazy when I tried searching. I find the flavor when opening (and even smell) to resemble alcohol as well! I tried looking it up but all I get are alcoholic recipes -_- Anyways, it doesn't burn the throat or anything when you eat it but the flavor is alarming. Won't purchase them again for sure x.x
