Next up in my Pure Protein bar review series is the Pure Protein S'mores Protein Bar. Much like all the other bars, I picked this one up at Meijer for $1.29 (I looked like more of a goof than usual that day with a shopping cart full of these things, but hey, to each their own I guess). One bar is 180 calories and 19 grams of protein, so it is nice that it is not a calorie killer. It's not a huge bar at only 1.76 ounces, but it's a nice protein packed treat (I use that term loosely).
The composition of this bar is meant to simulate an actual campfire s'more that a lot of us remember from our childhood. The bottom layer of this bar is the "graham cracker" and contains some powdery crumbles in order to confuse you. Once you get past the crumbles though, you find the typical protein bar gummy composition. On top of the "graham cracker" is the "marshmallow cream" (they actually call it that in the ingredient list in the back. While not as creamy as a typical melted marshmallow, this one is not all that far off from the real thing and that surprised me. You can't expect fully melty cream from something that is supposed to be shelf-safe, but they did a solid job of simulating that here. Bravo, Pure Protein. On top of the marshmallow cream and coating the entire bar was the thick layer of chocolate to wrap up the construction of your classic s'more.
Pure Protein has done a fairly good job so far passing the looks test, but the real question is, did it pass the taste test? And to answer that, I give a resounding yes! While the "graham cracker" was more gummy than crumbly, the gummy texture was actually pretty appetizing. My senses may have been deceiving me, but I felt it had a little caramel hint to it and since I love caramel, that's a check in the positive column for me. Next, the marshmallow cream was as close to real cream as you can get in a shelf-safe bar. So, not only did it look good for a shelf-safe bar, it tasted good as well. Two for two so far...can they pull the hat trick with the chocolate? Well, I already answered this with my previous resounding yes, so I will say that the chocolate was a resounding yes as well. It was mild and somewhat sweet and frankly, this was pretty close to typical candy bar chocolate and not the sometimes sandy/grainy chocolate that you find in these protein bars. Again, totally shocking to me.
Buy It or Fly By It? I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that I'm going to give this one a huge BUY IT rating. I mentioned it many times, but outside of the gummy "graham cracker", this one could actually double as a legitimate candy bar because I really did find it to be that good. Out of all the Pure Protein bars that I've had, this one is one of the best, if not the best. If you buy it, I think you may feel the same.
