Review: Kellogg's Special K Red Velvet Pastry Crisps

I'll admit that I have a love/hate relationship with products that are red velvet flavored and it's because of no real reason other than my stupidity.  For the longest time, I though red velvet was its own thing.  Not until later in life, while watching a Bobby Flay show on the Food Network, did I learn that red velvet is basically just chocolate dyed red.  Somehow, I felt cheated by that.  Yep, I'm a moron.  Anyway, Kellogg's Special K has decided to add to their review history on this blog with another variation flavor of their Pasty Crisps line with this box of Kellogg's Special K Red Velvet Pastry Crisps that I was able to pick up on a very nice sale at Kroger for $1.99.  Each box contains five packages of two crisps and each bar clocks in at 0.88 ounces with 100 calories and one gram of protein.

The box takes away the mystery here, so I can't really describe much.  Not surprisingly, these crisps are light and filled/covered very well with the white icing.  I will give Special K credit here...the picture of these crisps on the box is a pretty good representation of what I was given in real life, as you can see from my photo above.  The crisps themselves did have a strong sugary smell as well, so much like red velvet cupcakes (or any red velvet product), I knew that this one was going to be a sweet treat.

Sugary sweet.  That's how I'd describe these.  Much like the namesake treat, there was a lot of sweetness in this and the icing matched up well with the velvet (the crisp).  The crisp had that airy crunch to it like these pastry crisps usually do and the interior filling added some creaminess and fun texture to each bite.  Nothing about this screamed chocolate (DAMN YOU RED VELVET!), Just joking.  It did taste like rich chocolate and overall, it was definitely a sweet and enjoyable treat.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Other than sugary sweet, there wasn't a ton of stuff to say about this as it performed as I would have expected it too in terms of texture, etc.  That sugary sweet was appealing to me, so I'll give this a BUY IT rating.  I think that this might be my favorite out of all the pastry crisps solely because it is so sweet and that is right up my alley.  If that's your alley too, grab these when you see them (at the right price).

BUY IT!!
