Review: Hershey's Chocolate Covered Strawberry Pudding Cups

I spend way too much time in the pudding section of the grocery store.  I just can't get enough of the stuff.  It's weird, child-like and pretty much every other adjective you can think of to describe things that are odd and wrong.  Still, I own it and am not afraid to admit it.  Lately, I've noticed some new products creeping in from a titan of the sweets industry and while it took me a while to take the plunge and actually buy one, I finally saw a sale and picked up a four pack of these Hershey's Chocolate Covered Strawberry Pudding Cups on sale at Kroger for $2.50.  Each cup is 3.875 ounces and has 120 calories.  Outside of that, I'm not sure there is anything else pertinent for me to add on these because I know they have no nutritional value.  Now, I'm not sure why Hershey's would want to enter the pudding game, but I was certainly more than curious to find out if these would be any good or if it was something that they were trading on their name only and the product would actually taste awful.  I guess that is what the Crazy Food Dude is here to find out!

Before I stirred this up, you can see from the main picture of this review that this is constructed with strawberry pudding on the bottom of the cup and the chocolate pudding "covering" the strawberry pudding on top.  Yep, well played by Hershey's...the name of the product matches the design of the product and in a very playful spin on what some view as a sinful dessert.  The chocolate pudding smelled nicely of the classic Hershey's milk chocolate and the strawberry pudding had a nice strawberry smell to it as well.  Now, I'm not dumb (well, not completely dumb) so I know that these smells were more than likely the by-product of chemicals and food engineering, but I'm okay with that.

My first taste, because it was at the top and easiest to get to, was the chocolate pudding and it was rich, sweet and decadent.  It was an excellent representation of the classic Hershey's milk chocolate.  Honestly, this was one of the most chocolate tasting chocolate puddings I've ever had and that's saying a lot, because I've had a lot of them.  Next was the strawberry pudding and it had definite strawberry flavor.  Sweet with a hint of tang/tart.  It was entirely manufactured I'm sure, but it had very pleasing strawberry flavor.  Lastly, I mixed the two together and while it certainly wasn't a chocolate covered strawberry (the real thing), it was definitely chocolate flavor covering strawberry flavor and it was very pleasing.

Buy It or Fly By It?  A very pleasing pudding treat and I've got to hand it to Hershey's on this one because they did a good job and earned a BUY IT rating.  I'm not going to use to replace the real chocolate covered strawberries, but it is a tasty pudding treat that I would enjoy eating on the occasional basis when I can find it on sale.

BUY IT!!

  1. Not to be picky, but it looks like you might have accidentally used raspberry a few times instead of strawberry. Just an FYI. Thanks for all the reviews!
