Review: Chobani flip Chocolate Haze Craze Greek Yogurt

There's a song that I like to listen to and also work out to called "On To The Next One" by Jay-Z and that's sometimes how I feel reviewing the seemingly unending product line of some manufacturers that I've looked at on the blog.  While Chobani is certainly no General Mills, Kellogg's or Quaker, they've certainly carved out quite an impressive little product catalog even though they've been in existence for a substantially shorter period than some of those other monster companies.  I've looked at many of their products before, but that unending variety led me to try out a new flavor from their flip line of Greek yogurts when I picked up this container of Chobani flip Chocolate Haze Craze Greek Yogurt at Meijer for $1.29.  Each container is the seemingly yogurt standard of 5.3 ounces and has 250 calories and twelve grams of protein.  This one's also got a bit of fat too it as it checks in with 1.5% milkfat.  Seeing the "haze" in this is based on hazelnuts always reminds me of something that I read about the Mars family in a book based on the chocolate candy bar wars several years ago about how the Mars family has an infatuation with the chocolate and hazelnut combination and hates the chocolate and peanut butter combination.  Because of that, they've always pushed experimentation with chocolate and hazelnut combinations despite the fact that chocolate and peanut butter outsells it every time in the United States (but not in Europe).  So strange.

Looking at this, it was in the two separate compartments as all the Chobani flip product are.  On one side was the mix-ins, which included bits of hazelnut and small chocolate chips.  Pretty much standard stuff and not particularly notable.  On the other side was the Greek yogurt and I must say that it was notable.  First of all, it wasn't plain Greek yogurt like normal.  This was Greek yogurt that had chocolate and hazelnut flavor.  Hmm...interesting.  Within that tan-colored Greek yogurt were many chocolate shavings scattered throughout and it did have a moderately nutty smell.  It was bizarre, in a way.  It was also quite creamy, which should come as no surprise since this is Greek yogurt and it has a bit of milkfat to thicken it as well.

I won't spend much time on the mix-ins since I know what chocolate chips and hazelnuts taste like, although hazelnuts are one of the weirder nuts (or nuttier nuts...ha, ha) that I've eaten.  The chocolate chips had a degree of sweetness to them and the hazelnuts tasted like they were walnuts.  I actually had to double-check the packaging to make sure I wasn't eating walnuts.  Anyway, the real focal point of this is the chocolate and hazelnut Greek yogurt and I can say without a doubt that it was strange.  I mentioned that it smelled nutty.  Well, it tasted woody.  It was so strange.  The hazelnut (or walnut in my deranged mind) flavor was there and the chocolate flavor was there, but mixed together, they formed some sort of weird amalgamation which was made even more strange as the tartness and sourness of the Greek yogurt worked to cancel both of those out.  The chocolate shavings in the Greek yogurt were pretty much unnoticeable, although I'm sure they did play a part in that weird chocolate and hazelnut mix.  Finally, I dumped the mix-ins into this very odd tasting yogurt and they honestly saved this.  They added a great amount of texture, as I'd expect and the chocolate chips brought some crunch initially and then some decadent melting sweetness to offset the weird Greek yogurt.  The hazelnuts didn't really have a ton of flavor (just like walnuts), but they did add great crunch to this as well and that was needed to help divert from the oddness of the Greek yogurt flavor.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Everything about this was odd.  Even with that oddness, I would say that it was oddly appealing and I'll give it a tepid BUY IT rating.  If you aren't particularly adventurous or are not a fan of hazelnuts, I would stay far away from this.  If you are a fan of trying things new, no matter how different they are, then this is right up your alley.  So, in the end, this was an excellently named product because its flavor was a craze and its oddness definitely put me into a haze.

BUY IT!!

  1. Nice flavor, but would prefer to leave out the chocolate chips, which were not of high quality. I separated them and only put in the hazelnuts, and it was very good.

  2. I just finished this and it's ok. I get a strong mocha taste and that's not something I'm interested in.

    1. Ok, so I'm not the only one who got this. I didn't enjoy it at all. I tried to caramel crunch one yesterday and got the same weirdness. I won't be buying either of them again.
