Review: Appleways Strawberry Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar

I mentioned in my last Appleways review that I'm not sure any other store in the world other than Marsh carries these bars because I've never seen them.  If that is the case, that kind of limits the amount of people that would be affected by this review, but since I need content for the blog, I might as well keep reviewing these bars.  So, I picked up this Appleways Strawberry Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar at my local Marsh for $1.29.  It's 1.2 ounces and has 140 calories with two grams of protein.  It's simply wholesome (if you say so) and all natural as well, so there is that.

After opening the wrapper and breaking this extremely soft bar in half, I started to wonder where they key ingredient was (strawberry).  I know that I certainly smelled it as that strawberry smell was quite potent.  I didn't really see anything after reviewing the wrapper's claims that there were strawberry bits in here, I was truly mystified because I really didn't see any.  The smell was there though, so I knew there'd at least be an attempt as strawberry flavor, so I was good with that.  As for the rest of the bar, it was topped with a vanilla icing and the primary component of the bar was an oatmeal mix, as the name of the bar would imply.  One of the ingredients holding the oats together was surprisingly applesauce (learned that from the wrapper) and I can definitely say I would not have expected that.

Biting into this bar, it was immediately soft and chewy, which was nice.  Where this bar struggled, just like the other Appleways bar is that it leaned toward the dry side.  Fortunately, it had the vanilla icing topping that melted to add a little moisture to this.  That vanilla flavor worked well with the sweetness of the strawberry and the surprisingly prevalent tang of the applesauce that was holding it together.  If I had to assign a comparison to this, I would say it was almost a bizarre version of a scone, although clearly not the same thing.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This could have used a bit more moisture to it and perhaps for $1.29 per bar, it's a bit costly to buy it on its own, but I'm still going to give this a BUY IT rating.  It was interesting and flavorful enough that I found it to be appetizing and sometimes that's all it takes to make something work for me.

BUY IT!!

    1. Depending on your location, it might be the only option. I've been able to find them in my local Indianapolis-area stores, but I'm not sure where else they are available.
