Review: thinkThin Salted Caramel Lean Protein & Fiber Bar

Are you sick of thinking thin yet?  To be honest with you, I'm starting to get there.  That's one of the perils of picking up a big batch of similar products to review...you eventually get tired of doing the reviews and eating only mild derivations of essentially the same thing.  I'm not all the way there yet, but I'm getting there with these thinkThin reviews that I've really been hammering on recently.  That said, I've got today's review of this thinkThin Salted Caramel Lean Protein & Fiber Bar to help me get even closer to that breaking point.  I picked this one up at Kroger for $1.00 and just like the others, it's 1.41 ounces with 150 calories and ten grams of protein.  Also like the others, it is gluten free.

I might overuse the phrase "like the others" in this review because honestly, these bars are like the others.  This bar has the same dark chocolate outer coating like the others, so nothing about that surprised me.  What did surprise me was that the internal caramel "butter" had a very potent smell of caramel.  I expected some caramel smell, but this bar had a lot of it.  What was also not like the others was the fact that the dark chocolate had some smell in this bar, which was a change of pace.  Both of these thing were appreciated changes of pace as both the potent caramel and dark chocolate smells were quite inviting and made me more anxious to dive into this bar than I typically would have been.

Based on the smells coming off of this bar, I expected a lot of caramel and dark chocolate flavor coming out of this bar, but what I got was a lot of caramel flavor and not a lot of dark chocolate flavor.  I guess I shouldn't be overly surprised by the dark chocolate as the flavor was flat like dark chocolate typically is.  To be fair, I should be pleased with that because dark chocolate often has a bitter taste and this did not have that and I was very grateful for that.  As for the caramel, it was definitely potent and tended to have flavor more toward the burnt caramel type of taste.  What was also interesting/noticeable about this caramel was that the salted portion of the caramel flavor really did have a strong presence here as it pretty much tamed any sort of sweetness that may have been attempting to squeeze itself out of this caramel.  That salted flavor also lingered after each bite, so it did give it that kind of dry mouthfeel.  As for the texture of the bar, it was mostly soft and chewy with an occasional airy crunch added in by the soy crisps that were hiding within the caramel "butter" interior.  The dark chocolate kind of melted over that butter, but it was really only there to make this one a bit more gooey and add some contrast to the chewiness of the caramel interior.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I typically am not the world's biggest fan of salted caramel as I just don't like salty foods all that much unless I've got a craving for them.  Despite that bias against salted caramel and also dark chocolate (I've hammered on my dislike of dark chocolate before), I'd have to say that this bar really worked for me and I'll give it a BUY IT rating.  I was genuinely surprised afterwards about how appealing I found this bar, so if you are a dark chocolate and/or salted caramel person, I think you'll find this bar appealing too.

BUY IT!!

  2. These bars are all basically a CANDY BAR! I have tried most of them they leave an aftertaste! Nothing healthy about them. My glucose level go wild after I eat this specific one for some reason...
