I had seen a couple of new flavors of thinkThin bars at Marsh recently that I've touched on here with reviews, but on my most recent trip to Kroger, I was meandering through the nutrition bar section and much to my surprise, there was a cornucopia of new thinkThin bars for me to see. Always knowing that I need new content, I picked up all the flavors and you'll start seeing a lot of these reviews in the coming days as I plow my way through that impulse purchase. The first review is of this thinkThin Chocolate Almond Brownie Lean Protein & Fiber Bar that I picked up for $1.00. It's 1.41 ounces and has 150 calories and ten grams of protein.
From a stylistic standpoint, there's not a lot of beauty to this bar. It's encased in a thick layer of dark chocolate that has an extremely pleasant smell and then the interior is more chocolate (protein mix) with some soy crisps and bits of almonds mixed in. It's really not a complicated bar and I suppose that can be a good thing. What was interesting about this bar was that it took the manufacturer's name quite literally as this was a very thin bar, which I found to be kind of interesting in the kind of bizarre ways that interest perhaps only me.
Biting into this was semi-interesting. Texturally, it was kind of gummy, so that was a turn off. What it did have to counteract that gumminess was an occasional hard crunch from the bits of almonds that were scattered amongst the bar and then an occasional airy crunch from the bits of soy crisps that were scattered amongst the bar. Textural oddness not withstand, I would say that the flavor of this was pretty solid. The dark chocolate was rich and dense, although it wasn't overly sweet, nor should dark chocolate be expected to be that way. Quite honestly, the FLAVOR tasted a lot like a brownie, which is obviously good since that's what the product is named after. Outside of that tasty dark chocolate flavor, there really wasn't much else going on here, so this ended up being a pretty basic flavor.
Buy It or Fly By It? If it wasn't for the odd texture of this bar, it might rate up as one of my favorites. But, the odd texture makes me knock it down a few ratings points, but not enough to ruin this bar for me. I'm still going to give this a BUY IT rating because the dark chocolate flavor was so good and this was ultimately a good bar, texture notwithstanding.
