Those tricky Quaker Oats people (Tricky Dick Nixon was a Quaker, by the way; coincidence?). They keep putting out new products for reviews and when I was recently strolling through my local Meijer, I noticed that there are two new flavors of their standard size Chewy bar. Today's review is the first of those flavors that I'll look at as I was able to pick up this box of eight Quaker Chewy Chocolate Strawberries Granola Bars on sale for $1.67. These are so new that they do not even have a presence on the Quaker website as of the time that I am writing this post. Each bar in the box is 0.84 ounces and 100 calories. Basically, that's the same size and caloric measurements as the standard Chewy products.
As with most of the standard Chewy bars, there's nothing particularly fancy about this, at least from the perspective of the base. It's the standard Quaker Chewy granola mix with little bits of strawberry and strawberry flavored cranberries (weird) mixed into the granola. Now, this one does get fancy once you get past the standard mix though as Quaker has really stepped up and made this one high class (yes, I'm being sarcastic) by putting the chocolate swirl on top of the bar. With that chocolate swirl on top of the strawberry bit infused granola, this one definitely does a good job emulating the decadent chocolate covered strawberries that are on the front of the box. And in case you couldn't tell, I was once again employing sarcasm there.
These Quaker Chewy bars don't often surprise me and that was definitely the case here. I guess that's what makes these things so popular...they are consistent producers and consumers basically know what they are going to get before they even take their first bite. What I got was the standard Quaker granola with a slight hint of occasional strawberry pop. On top of that occasional strawberry pop was an occasional hint of melty chocolate. Again, all things that I expected and there is nothing wrong with that. While certainly not as decadent as an actual chocolate covered strawberry, this bar certainly had enough characteristics of both to make this into was it was hoping for.
Buy It or Fly By It? Not earth shattering and not bad...just a consistent and tasty producer, like nearly every single Quaker Chewy bar that I've had in my life. Because of that, this gets its expected BUY IT rating. It's a nice addition to the Quaker Chewy bar product family as most of the bars tend to skew toward the candy side, so incorporating one that has a little bit of fruit flavor (albeit mixed with chocolate) is a good decision by Quaker that has led to a tasty result.
