Review: CLIF Mojo Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt Bar

I drilled to you, my loyal readers, ad nauseam in reviews that I buy things in splurges and these new CLIF Mojo bars were part of a Kroger splurge after I saw in my weekly ad that they had introduced some new flavors.  So, that splurge led me to grab this CLIF Mojo Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt Bar.  It was on sale for a $1.00 (you know that I LOVE sales) and it comes in at 1.41 ounces.  It's also packing 200 calories and a somewhat minimal five grams of protein.

Like I've also mentioned ad nauseam in these Mojo bar reviews is that because of the clear packaging, there's not a lot of mystery in how these bars look.  That said, I still describe it because my fingers need the exercise from typing.  So here we go...the bar starts off with a base of a dark chocolate coating.  That coating is then topped (or coating) a soy crisp layer that also has a mixed of tiny pecan pieces and HUGE almonds.  Also included in that mix are large cubes of dark chocolate and also sea salt.  Now, I certainly couldn't see the sea salt, but boy, oh boy could I ever smell it.  Being that salt is fine in moderation, but not good when you can actually smell it in my opinion, that was not exactly an enticing characteristic for me as I examined this bar prior to eating it.

Much like what happened with the smell of this bar, the only thing I could really taste after my first bite was sea salt with a hint of dark chocolate.  Now, before I complain about the sea salt, I should say that the dark chocolate in this bar was actually kind of good and for a person like me that is not the biggest fan of dark chocolate to say that, then you know it must be good.  It wasn't foul, bitter or anything like that.  I would even go so far as to say that it had a mild degree of sweetness.  As far as the rest of the flavor of the bar was concerned, that's the only positive thing that I have to say.  There was just too much sea salt here for my liking.  Now, in terms of texture, this bar was kind of fun.  The large almonds and ground up pecans made this a grainy and crunchy bar that mixed well with the chewiness of the soy crisps.  The dark chocolate cubes and coating had a melting quality that coated the nuts and soy crisp, so that was kind of fun too.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Had it not been for the sea salt, I think I would have really enjoyed this bar.  It had a lot of positive characteristics and qualities going for it, but that overwhelming sea salt flavor was just too much for me, so I'll give this a FLY BY IT rating.  Now, if you love salty flavored things, I think this would be right up your alley.  I fully admit that my rating is based solely on my own personal tastes, so that into account if you see this one looking at you on the shelf at your local store.

FLY BY IT!!
