Kashi released the subject of today's review a few months back, but since I'm so tight fisted and cheap, I've resisted buying a box of these because I did not want to pay full price just to add another review to the Kashi catalog. Recently on a trip to Meijer though, they had a box of six of these for sale at a decent enough price for me ($3.00) that I decided to pick it up and try out this "new" flavor of Kashi Berry Lemonade with Chia Chewy Granola Bars. Like I said, there are six bars in the box and each bar is 1.2 ounces and 120 calories with six grams of protein.
The front of the box obviously provides a dead giveaway on these as it shows all the pertinent ingredients in all their visual glory, thereby making my "professional" photo above redundant. That said, the granola bar mix itself was bound together with honey and the mix-ins included some cranberries and some additional lemon juice. There were some chia seeds in there too (uhh...yummy?), but outside of that, there wasn't much going on from a visual perspective. One thing of note was that this bar definitely captured the lemonade motif of its name because it had a strong smell of the summery drink.
As I bit into this bar, Kashi definitely nailed it when they put chewy in the product name as it was definitely that. It also had a lot of grainy texture in the chewiness as well due to the chia seeds that were spread amply throughout the bar. The dried cranberries also provided a bit of gummy chew as well. Anyway, enough about the texture. The flavor of this bar was definitely lemonade as it was both tangy and tart and frankly, it was a bit overpowering. I love lemonade, but this was just too much and actually kind of made my sinuses tingle as I chewed my way through the bar and not in a good way. I was put off by that and since the granola mix was just standard granola with a hint of sweetness due to the honey binder, this bar was all about the lemonade portion and it was just too much.
Buy It or Fly By It? This was a reasonable re-creation of lemonade flavoring in a granola bar form, but I personally did not find it all that appealing, so I'll give it a FLY BY IT rating. While some may enjoy the strength of that lemonade flavoring, it just wasn't for me and I don't think I'd ever actively seek out one of these bars again. That said, it does have okay flavor, but just not a flavor that is up my alley. Perhaps it would be up your alley and you'd have a differing opinion though.
