Review: Rickland Orchards Toasted Coconut Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bar

I mention a lot that I often think I've capped out on flavors in particular product manufacturers catalog and that has certainly been the case with Rickland Orchards reviews.  Typically, my thoughts are often proven wrong as I always managed to unearth some new flavor and that's the case with this Rickland Orchards Toasted Coconut Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bar that I picked up at Kroger for $1.25.  It comes in at 1.41 ounces with 170 calories and seven grams of protein.  Hilariously (in my opinion), the wrapper also proclaims this is made up of strained Greek yogurt coating imported from Europe!  Not sure why a company would want to proclaim that, especially since the back of the wrapper says that the bar is made in Canada with European ingredients (again, hilarious), but whatever.

As the wrapper proclaimed, this bar is coated with strained Greek yogurt imported from Europe and that mild smelling yogurt coating is on the bottom of the bar.  There's also some yogurt swirls on top of the bar, so there's the European portions.  The granola mix that forms the bulk of the bar consists of almonds, soy crisps and shaved toasted coconut shards, but I'm not sure what continent any of those are from because the wrapper doesn't say (ha!).  The almonds and toasted coconut shards were prevalent throughout the bar did have a noticeable, although not overwhelming, smell of coconut emanating from it.

After I took my first bite, my immediate thought was, "uh, where's the coconut?"  All I could taste was the Greek yogurt, which was fine, but nothing else appeared until a few seconds later when I was hit by a blast of coconut flavor.  The toasted portion of this brought a little sweetness to that coconut flavor and it continued to just linger the longer it sat in my mouth and even afterwards when there was nothing in my mouth.  I felt foolish wondering where the coconut flavor was initially because there was definitely no confusion as to where it was after a few seconds.  The Greek yogurt and coconut flavor did have an odd balance to it though that some people may find off-putting.  At first, I didn't really like it, but much like the coconut flavor itself, it grew on me.  The rest of the bar was just granola and almonds and that was basically what you'd expect out of it.  It was crunchy but didn't really have a lot of flavor, but the yogurt and coconut portions of this brought so much flavor that the fact that the granola was fairly bland was not an issue.

Buy It or Fly By It?  As with a lot of coconut products, this really comes down to how much you like coconut.  Personally, I enjoy it and give this a BUY IT rating.  It was a lot of coconut, but I was okay with it in the end.  If you are on the fence about coconut, it's buyer beware on this because there's a lot of coconut here that's going to smack you in the face.  Don't say I didn't warn you!

BUY IT!!
