Review: Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Toffee Crunch Chocolatey Toffee Granola Bars

I have an admission to make...I love toffee and I don't know why.  For some reason, any time that I'm near toffee, I can't keep my hands off of it, especially when that toffee is mixed with chocolate.  Knowing that, diving into another Kellogg's Nutri-Grain review with today's new product review of these Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Toffee Crunch Chocolatey Toffee Granola Bars would seem to be right up my alley.  I picked up this box of ten bars (five pouches with two bars each actually) on sale at Meijer for $3.00.  Each pouch is a combined 1.48 ounces with 190 calories and three grams of protein with 25% of your daily fiber value.  I'll leave it up you if you want to do the math to come up with the per bar values.

As with the rest of these Nutri-Grain granola bars, this one is extremely messy and crumbly.  One thing that this bar has going for it though that the other bars did not is that the buttery toffee in this one not only smelled strongly, but also did a better job than the typical syrups holding the granola together.  Don't get me wrong, it still made a mess everywhere, but it at least made less of a mess than usual.  The bars themselves were that aforementioned granola that was held together by the strong smelling buttery toffee and then the base of the bars was a also strong smelling chocolate.  All in all, it was everything that I love about chocolate and toffee and I was very much looking forward to that, especially since granola is one of my uncontrollable (thankfully healthy) vices.

While this was everything I love about chocolate, toffee and granola from a presentation perspective, it wasn't that from a flavor perspective.  Don't misunderstand though, this was not a bad tasting product.  In fact, it was a fairly solid tasting product.  The toffee had that extremely rich (not sweet; more of a burnt taste) and buttery taste and the fact that it was buttery helped break up what is typically dry granola in these Nutri-Grain granola bars, so it was a success there.  The chocolate also was quite rich as well and while it did not have any particular sweetness, it was quite dense and when mixed with the rich flavor of the toffee, what I got was a crunchy bar that had extremely dense flavor that lacked any sort of discernible sweetness.  Even without the sweetness, the toffee flavor was still solid.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Reading that flavor description again, it really sounds like I didn't particulary enjoy these bars, but that is not the case at all.  While this may not have been the most enjoyable thing I've ever eaten, the chocolate and toffee flavor was tasty enough that I do not hesitate to give this a BUY IT rating.  It didn't knock my socks off in any sort of discernible fashion, but if you are a lover of chocolate, toffee or both, this is a more than acceptable dining option.

BUY IT!!
