I've taken a look at a couple of Kemp's products here on the blog and have had one hit and one miss, which isn't all that surprising to me because I find most of their flavors to be somewhat boring when I look at the varieties in the freezer case. I wouldn't expect everyone to have the creativity (or craziness depending on how you look at it) of Ben & Jerry's or some of the other manufacturers, but it appears as if Kemp's philosophy is to stick with standard flavor combinations and in the case of this Kemp's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Frozen Yogurt, they appear to have stuck to that philosophy. I got this 1.5 quart container on sale at Kroger for $3.50 (I additionally had a $1.00 off coupon, so it was a really good deal) and it's the standard twelve half-cup servings per container. Each serving is 130 calories, so it's a relatively "healthy" frozen treat.
From a basic flavor, I wouldn't expect a whole lot of creativity in terms of the composition of this container and that's what I got. This was semi-creamy chocolate frozen yogurt that had a strong chocolate smell mixed with good sized peanut butter cup chunks that were broken up and spread throughout the container of ice cream. There weren't tons of them, but there were plenty enough that I didn't feel that I was going to get shorted when I served myself up a dish of this (let's be honest, I eat these straight out of the container).
When I took my first spoonful, I was delightfully surprised by the richness of the chocolate yogurt here. Despite the fact that the product description includes that word, I was still surprised by that because I've been fooled by product descriptions far too many times. Not only was the flavor rich, but it was also dense, so the chocolate flavor in this was front and center. As for the well-spread peanut butter cups, they were about what I would have expected as I've had about a billion (only a slight exaggeration) peanut butter cups in my life. That mix of chocolate and semi-sweet peanut butter was a nice textural break up to the chocolate frozen yogurt itself and those pops of crunch were quite welcome so that this was both creamy and crunchy.
Buy It or Fly By It? Not an epic flavor or flavor combination, but Kemp's delivered well on this one and I'd give it a BUY IT rating. Personally, I find the chocolate and peanut butter combination to be held in too high of esteem at times, but I do know a lot of people that worship at its altar and this Kemp's product is for them because it does a more than adequate job of delivering.
