Review: Designer Whey Peanut Butter Crunch Protein Bar

Today's review is of another product that snuck up on me in the store in the nutrition bar aisle.  As I've said before, I often peruse the nutrition section hoping to get snuck up on because that means that I've got sources for new reviews.  This Designer Whey Peanut Butter Crunch Protein Bar definitely fits that bill as I saw it hiding on sale for $1.00 on the bottom shelf of the section.  There were originally two flavors, but one was completely out (perhaps this was a clearance sale?), so I snatched up this one remaining flavor to try out.  This bar itself comes in at 1.41 ounces and has 160 calories and ten grams of protein.  Based on the name, I'm going to guess they whey in this bar is quite fancy as well.  I do know, based on the wrapper, that its naturally flavored and sweetened, so I guess it has got that going for it.

Before I ripped open the wrapper, I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this bar, but I do know that I did not expect the bar to look like this and I don't mean that in a bad way.  For lack of a better way to describe it, I figured this would look more industrial looking (ugly and just one big blob of a bar with everything piled in together), but instead, it had more of a candy bar look to it with the chocolate swirl that decorated the thick and strong smelling peanut butter coating. After breaking this in half though, it did look like any other standard protein bar in that it had the soy/whey interior and that's about it (similar to a lot of Zone Perfect bars).

The candy bar motif, if I can call it that, continued when I bit into the bar as well.  A lot of times with these bars, they pretty much taste like a flavorless piece of Styrofoam   Thankfully, that was not the case with this bar as the peanut butter flavor was definitely potent and quickly melted in my mouth, just like the oft mentioned candy bar effect.  One thing that is neat about the peanut butter flavor in this is that it just keeps on coming and really doesn't dissipate at all.  If peanut butter is your thing, this flavor effect would be your thing.  One flavor that is missing here though is the chocolate flavor from the decorative (or designer) swirl on top of the bar.  I think that's probably just because the peanut butter flavor is so potent though and the chocolate just gets lost in the mix.  One bone I do have to pick with this bar though is they usage of "Crunch" in the name.  This bar was not crunchy at all and was more chewy than anything.  Again, I didn't really care, but because I'm an uptight buffoon, the naming of products continues to bother me.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I didn't really expect a lot of this bar going in and frankly, I kind of expected this to be terrible.  What I got was something that I would almost go so far as to classify as delicious, so this gets a strong BUY IT rating from me.  Being the peanut butter lover that I am, this bar was right up my alley and I enjoyed every single bite.  As long as this bar isn't going away and you see it on the shelves of your local store, it's definitely worth a purchase and a tasty eating experience.

BUY IT!!
