Review: Haagen-Dazs Spiced Caramel Biscuit Ice Cream

I don't know why, but I've always stayed away from reviewing Haagen-Dazs products for the blog.  Actually, I don't even buy them at the store either and I'm not sure why.  Maybe it's because I'm angry that their "pints" are only fourteen ounces or that it costs an arm and a leg to buy one (it's probably the latter).  My local Marsh ran a sale recently where it was buy two containers and get a third free, so finally with a deal like that, I was able to get these down to a range where I wouldn't have to take a bank loan just to purchase one.  So, I took the leap and that leads me to this limited edition product review of the Haagen-Dazs Spiced Caramel Biscuit Ice Cream.  Each container is fourteen ounces, which equates to 3.5 half-cup servings.  Each serving itself had a robust and completely unhealthy (par for the course with Haagen-Dazs) 290 calories per serving.  This may be off the shelves in your area by now as my Marsh usually keeps things too long (looking at some of their expiration dates is sometimes an adventure), but I'll just go ahead and add my thoughts to the long list of online reviews already done on this (links at the end of this post).

After visiting the Haagen-Dazs product page for this one, there's no way I can resist not posting the poetic product description from their site "the classic European biscuit speculoos inspired our spiced caramel biscuit ice cream. we crumble sugary, crunchy cinnamon-sparked biscuits into velvety caramel ice cream for an intense flavor experience in every bite."  Now, I've never heard of speculoos before, but doesn't that just sound so dreamy?  Maybe.  Regardless, as you can see from my photo above, there were a plethora of those biscuits spread throughout the container, so it was nice to know that me paying paying premium prices allowed me to not get shorted on the amount of biscuit mix-ins included.  My wallet definitely felt better at that point.  After a I spooned out a biscuit for closer review, it was very crumbly as well, so it was clear that the crunch part of the product description would play out as true as well.  Nice.

Another part of the product description that played out true to form was the description of the ice cream as velvety and this was definitely some of the creamiest ice cream I've ever tried.  Wholly unhealthy, but the texture of it was fairly outstanding.  As for the caramel flavor...well, I can't quite say the same.  It was obvious that this was caramel, but it wasn't overpowering caramel.  In fact, it bordered on being boring, in my opinion.  The sugary and cinnamon-sparked biscuits did deliver though and that was a nice flavor break up to the creamy ice cream as they brought a mild hit of heat and sweet, along with the aforementioned crunchiness.  All in all,  it was a nice, but not overwhelmingly wonderful package.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Like I said, I'm sure this is off the shelves in most of the world by now, but if you were to see it, I would say FLY BY IT.  This one delivered on what it promised and it was fine to eat just this container, but outside of that, nothing about this screamed for me to have a desire to buy it again.  If I'm going to empty my bank account to pay premium prices for ice cream, it better be very memorable.  This one just wasn't that.  Based on some of the reviews below, I think I might be the only one that had that opinion though, so take it with a grain of salt.

FLY BY IT!!

  1. This conclusion seems unique because Haagen-Dazs is cheaper than your beloved Walden Farms. Obviously they are on the opposite sides of the caloric spectrum, but this review harps more on the money. So that leads me to believe calorically and monetarily aside you would prefer a WF product over this HD product, to which I may say sir, you are one crazy food dude.

  2. Yeah, but if that is the case, I'd agree with him on that - if I'm going to spend money and a lot of calories, the calories should really be worth it!

  3. I really enjoy HD products, but I almost never pay full price for them. The one recent except was I was just dying for their Dulce du Leche. Of course that was last week and this week they're on sale 2/$5.
