Review: Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax Crunchy Granola Bar

Whoever is responsible for buying snacks at my office must have fallen in love with Kashi products because I've been seeing them around the office a lot lately and being the freebie freak that I am, I've been snatching them up for reviews. It's that trolling of the office snacks yet again that leads me to this review of the Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax Crunchy Granola Bar. This is a two granola bar pack (didn't expect that) and each pack is 1.4 ounces at 170 calories and five grams of protein. Divide those in half and you've obviously got the measurements for each all natural bar.

Looking above, you can obviously see that these are strikingly similar to a lot of the other granola bars that I've covered on the blog based on their appearance. Another similarity is that these are very crumbly and make quite a mess. Anyway, the primary feature of this is obviously granola, but within that mix are a good amount of pieces of pumpkin and pumpkin seeds. The bar is coated with a layer of cinnamon dust which, along with a healthy dose of nutmeg in the granola mix, provides quite a pungent smell that will quickly remind anyone of fall and pumpkin pie. I've developed a liking for pumpkin flavored products recently, so that aroma piqued my interest in this quite a bit.

After I took my first bite, the primary flavor I tasted was granola.  Shocking, I know. After thinking that the pumpkin pie smell was just a scent and not a taste, I started to go in for my second bite and then was hit by the sweet of the pumpkin, the heat of the cinnamon and the bitterness of the nutmeg all at the same time as kind of an aftertaste.  None of these flavors was overwhelming, but they definitely all announced their presence.  Being that I'm not a big nutmeg guy (it's my least favorite part of pumpkin flavored foods), the fact that the nutmeg, while prevalent, was muted somewhat was very much appreciated by me.  What I did enjoy was the balance of the pumpkin sweetness and the cinnamon spice.  Sweet and heat are a fun flavor combination when they hit you evenly and that was the case with this.

Buy It or Fly By It?  While there was nothing overly outstanding about this bar, I still did enjoy it because I like pumpkin flavored products and it reminds me of the pie and other treats, so this gets a BUY IT rating.  If you are not a pumpkin or cinnamon person, you'll probably want to stay away from this and go for a different granola flavor because this one definitely will make you taste those things.

BUY IT!!
