One thing I wish the world had more of was more bars that were covered in chocolate instead of just being granola bars with add-ins. Quaker has gone a long way doing this with their Dipps line of bars, but now Fiber One is joining the fray by not only releasing a bar that is covered in chocolate, but also one that is a protein bar as well with their release of this Fiber One Protein Caramel Nut Chewy Bar to add to my Fiber One bar review archives. I picked up a box of five of these at Marsh for $2.49 and each bar is 1.17 ounces and 130 calories with seven grams of protein. It's 20% of your daily fiber value as well.
As I mentioned before, this bar is covered in chocolate and being that the rest of the bar is hidden by that, it's a good place to start. It's a strong smelling chocolate that was kind of muted once I broke the bar in half and was met with an almost overwhelming smell of delicious caramel and also a strong peanut smell as well. I can't say that I've had a bar that smelled so strongly of so many different things in quite a while. As for the composition of the bar, it was the standard soy crisp/granola base mixed with little peanuts and then topped by gooey caramel. As I mentioned previously the bar is then covered by chocolate. Chocolate, caramel, peanuts...it's a delicious recipe for success on paper, but games (or bars) aren't one on paper as they say.
When I took a bite of this, my first taste was of that overwhelmingly strong smelling caramel and goodness, it was sweet. It was also gooey and when that gooey texture mixed with the chewy texture of the bulk of the bar, it made for kind of a fun chew. The bar had the occasional peanut crunch, but it was mostly soft and chewy. The peanut flavoring, while also strong, was no match for the chocolate and caramel, yet it did do a good job complimenting both of those. The chocolate coating just added more sweetness to the already sweet caramel and frankly, this bar was more like a candy bar and less like your typical "healthy" Fiber One bar.
Buy It or Fly By It? Like I said, this was pretty much a candy bar and any time you can be fooled into thinking your fiber treat is like a dessert, it's a winner in my mind and gets a BUY IT rating. As I said though, this bar is extremely sweet, so if you aren't feeling like sweets or a dessert, you are probably going to want to stay away from this. If you do have that craving and want the additional fiber health benefits, this is a good one to reach for.
