Review: Fiber One Strawberry PB&J Chewy Bar

A common memory of nearly everyone's childhoods are eating countless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The only thing that may have differed from some people's memories are the flavors of jelly that they used on their sandwiches.  In my house, it was always grape.  In some houses though, strawberry sometimes made it into the equation.  It's that peanut butter and strawberry combination that Fiber One is trying to re-create with this Fiber One Strawberry PB&J Chewy Bar that adds to my growing Fiber One review series.  I picked up a box of six of these at Kroger on sale for $2.99 and each bar in the box is one ounces and 110 calories with two grams of protein.  Each bar also contains 10% of your daily calcium intake and 20% of your daily fiber intake (based on a 2,000 calorie diet), so it's packing quite a powerful punch.

On looks alone, Fiber One has done a pretty solid job re-creating the sandwich itself.  The bar has a base layer of peanut butter icing topped by an oat mix containing decent sized dried strawberries (think of raisins for a size comparison).  The bar is then topped with a peanut butter icing, so all advertised flavors are represented visually and also in terms of the smell as well as the bar has noticeable smells of both flavors.  It's fairly pliable too, so I can already tell prior to biting into it that it will be a chewy bar as well.  Again, just as the name promises, so Fiber One gets today's gold star for at least delivering on physical aspects.

After I bit into this, I was immediately transported back to my memories of the hundreds of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I had growing up because this bar pretty much nailed it, although in a slightly different way.  Obviously the slightly different was is that there is not any bread in this, but instead a soft and chewy oat mix.  One thing that the oat mix did do was make me think I was eating the "sandwich" on wheat bread as opposed to white bread and being that I prefer that combination, I very much enjoyed that.  The peanut butter flavor was the predominant flavor between the two star ingredients, but it wasn't overpowering or overly sweet.  It was just standard peanut butter flavor, which is more than fine.  The dried strawberries brought some sweetness to the combination, but again, it wasn't overly sweet and provided a wonderful accent flavor.  Put together, it was a mix of mild sweetness and mild saltiness...a dream combination for some people.  Dream combination or not, it was a more than adequate re-creation of the sandwich.

Buy It or Fly By It?  The more I chewed through this bar, the more I wanted so that obviously gives it a BUY IT rating.  This is one of those things that I think could reach the point of being borderline addicting and may require me to only buy a box periodically because I could see myself inhaling an entire box of these in less than one day and while at 110 calories a pop, it's not a bad thing, it's also not a good thing either.  Anyway you look at it though, this was delicious and I can't wait to have my next one because even adults love re-living childhood treats from time-to-time!

BUY IT!!
