Review: LUNA Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar

LUNA bars are part of the CLIF Bar family, so it seems only fitting that LUNA offers a wide variety of product lines since their parent business does as well.  I've taken a look at several LUNA bars already, but this is my first dip into their LUNA Protein line with my review of this pretty standard flavored LUNA Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar.  I picked this one up at Meijer for $1.09 and it weighs in at a semi-decent weight of 1.6 ounces and has 190 calories and twelve grams of protein, which of course is more protein than a standard LUNA bar because this is part of the Protein line.  Duh!

As I took the wrapper off of this and pulled the bar out of the packaging, I can't say I was surprised in the slightest bit about how it looked.  It was a standard looking bar with a outer chocolate coating and when I broke it in half, the interior was filled with a flaky peanut butter.  The reason I call it flaky is because the peanut butter was mixed with all the other fun ingredients that usually comprise a protein mix, along with some rice crisp mix as well.  So, it didn't give that smooth look of peanut butter out of a jar, but kind of what I'll call a weathered look as it had all sorts of additional ingredients on top of the standard peanut butter.  One thing of note though was that this bar felt particularly dense in my hand and also smelled strongly of peanut butter, so that was encouraging.

When I bit into the bar, I can't really say I was surprised by anything.  It tasted just as the name would imply.  The peanut butter was thick, sweet and hearty and provided a nice kick of sweetness with its flavoring.  The chocolate was thick, but only faintly sweet, but that was okay since the peanut butter was clearly taking the lead in this bar with its sweetness.  Had the chocolate been particularly sweet as well, this bar may have been almost too sweet and possibly inedible.  Instead, what I got was the perfect combination of chocolate and peanut butter that I enjoyed immensely with each successive bite.  The rice crisps in the interior also added a nice occasional cracker like crunch to bring a little crunch to the bar to break up the gummy feeling of the peanut butter/protein mix and that was greatly appreciated.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I've got to give this a very strong BUY IT rating because this was a really good bar.  It's a simple and semi-obvious flavor combination, but LUNA did remarkably well with how they tinkered with the ingredient combinations and were able to come up with what I'll call a delicious bar.  The only disappointment I had with this bar is that I eventually ran out of bar to eat and wished I had more because I enjoyed this so darn much.  I just wish there had been more because I could have eaten this all day long and it's rare that I'm able to say that about any protein bar.  Pick it up yourself and I think you'll agree.

BUY IT!!

  2. They do taste good but as a person on a high protein diet they gave me crazy gas. Going back to pure protein bars.
