Review: Blue Bell Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream

Having exhausted myself on Ben & Jerry's ice creams, I was in my recent Meijer recently scanning the ice cream freezer and I came across the Blue Bell Ice Cream section.  Now, I've known about Blue Bell ice cream for quite some time and have heard some recent positive publicity on it from both the web and my friends/relatives, but I've never developed any sort of attachment to it.  Usually that was because it only came in the 1.75 quart containers and it was expensive, so I just didn't want any part of it.  On that recent visit, I noticed that my Meijer is now selling it in pint sizes and it was on sale at a ridiculously absurd $1.49 per pint.  Cheap is my adopted middle name, so I knew I had to grab a pint to check it out.  Just for statistics purposes, this pint of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream is the typical four servings at a relatively tame 180 calories.

My first observation when I opened this was, "Holy Crap, look at the size of those cookie dough pieces."  I don't know if my picture does it the appropriate amount of justice, but these things were enormous.  They were also spread plentifully about the pint, so as the add-in dude that I always claim that I am, I was already feeling love at first sight.  The rest of the pint is spread with intermittent chocolate chips and it's all bound together by vanilla ice cream.  Anyway, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream is always pretty boring in how it is constructed (unless the cookie dough pieces are huge like these), so the real test is how did it actually taste?

Well, I can say with no reservations or hesitations, this tasted unbelievably awesome.  The ice cream itself was creamy and had a nice cooling vanilla flavor.  The dark chocolate chips were hearty and rich and also added a nice crunch to the ice cream with balanced out well with the ENORMOUS pieces of cookie dough.  Those pieces of cookie dough were both soft and sweet and were pretty much a freshly baked cookie, except that they were stuffed into a pint of ice cream.  There's not much else to say as I can only say something was delicious so many times before people get tired of me.

Buy It or Fly By It?  In the most obvious decision of all time, this gets a ENORMOUS BUY IT rating.  Frankly, this might be the best cookie dough ice cream I've ever had and that's saying something because I've had a lot of them.  It's decadent, chewy, crunchy and all that entails rolled into one pint of fun.  The fact that it was on sale for $1.49 (normal price was $1.67; WHAT?!) makes it even better and I'll be rushing to try out more Blue Bell flavors based on how unbelievable good this one was.  Pick this up and I think you may find true love like I think I have after devouring this pint.

BUY IT!!

    1. LOL, that may take some time to accomplish, but the good news is that I already have two more Blue Bell pint reviews written that you'll see popup sometime in the future.

  3. I'm with Dubba, I love seeing products I wouldn't be able to find in my area. It gives me an idea what to look out for when I'm traveling. As for the best cookie dough flavor, have you tried blue bunny's super chunky cookie dough? That has to be my favorite next to turkey hill's variety.

  4. I haven't seen their chocolate chip cookie dough in pints yet, nice find! I'll definitely be picking some up after this rave review if I run across any.

I'm so glad I have access to Blue Bell in my area, they make some great stuff. If you can find Banana Pudding, you should definitely purchase some.

    1. Thanks for the tip, but that is one that I won't be reviewing unfortunately. Bananas are not a food that I enjoy AT ALL, so I'll be staying away from that one.

  5. Blue Bell makes my favorite Cookie Dough variation. For pints they also make a Krazy Kookie Dough. I'm a big fan of chocolate but it really blew me away too. Good stuff.

  6. FYI: Blue Bell is one of the few ice cream companies that still sell half-gallons (and proudly labeled as such). Their Homemade Vanilla is one of the best out there. It's not super premium ice cream, but who cares? It's good!

  7. Do the cookie dough chunks taste like Haagan Daz cookie dough chunks? They are my favorite flavor but I'm not happy with the ratio of cookie dough chunks to ice cream, way too much ice cream.

  8. I searched "best cookie dough ice cream" to see if anyone else liked this stuff as much as I do. I was a long time Ben and Jerry's snob until I tried this cookie dough ice cream. I have tried several different cookie doughs since trying Blue Bell's and have not found anything else that comes close. It has been my favorite for a few months now. I really think the difference is the quality of the vanilla base that they use. Most others seem to have a weird taste when mixed with the cookie dough. I agree with you on the big chunks of dough in the chocolate chips helping out with the texture. Thanks so much for writing the article!
