Review: Rickland Orchards Cherri Almond Greek Yogurt Bar

So I believe I've mentioned before that my company has a wellness refrigerator where they stock it with "healthy" snacks.  In addition to this, they've also started a daily "snack break" at 3:00 p.m., which I find to be hilarious.  It's like we are in day care or something.  Anyway, during one of those snack breaks they threw out a product from a manufacturer that I had never seen before and that was this Rickland Orchards Cherri Almond Greek Yogurt bar (very cute spelling of cherry, by the way; so weird).  Obviously I didn't pay for it, but I can tell you that I've seen it at Meijer for $1.59, it weighs 1.41 ounces and has 160 calories and seven grams of protein.  The bar also professes itself to be an excellent source of fiber and protein, so there's clearly all sorts of health benefits to this bar.

As you can see on the packaging, there's an added component to this bar too as not only does it have cherries and almonds, but it also has honey roasted granola!  Yea!  Smart ass comments aside, this bar is constructed of a Greek yogurt base with the honey roasted granola mix on top.  Within the granola mix is a pretty fair amount of decent sized dried cherry bits and also some fairly decent sized almond pieces as well.  Actually, I've got to say I was slightly surprised by the size of the almond pieces as I didn't expect them to be as large as they were.  Don't get me wrong, they weren't huge, but they seemed to be larger than I would ordinarily expect in this a snack bar like this.  One other note was that this bar was quite firm.  What I mean by that is that when I broke it in half for the above picture, it made a faint snapping noise similar to a nut shell or something of the like.  To top off the entire package, there was a nice little designer swirl of more Greek yogurt.

Biting into this, I was met with a very pleasant crunch.  The granola was the basis of that crunch and when I encountered one of the ample sized almond pieces, the crunch just got even stronger.  Being that I'm a major crunch lover, I was delighted by that aspect of the bar.  In terms of the actual taste though, the bar had a moderate sweetness that was then muted by the coolness of the Greek yogurt.  It wasn't overly sweet and the yogurt wasn't overly tart...in fact all of these flavors could just be described as mild.  I can't really speak as to the honey flavor in the granola though because I believe that its sweetness was masked by and/or worked in conjunction with the sweetness of the cherries.  It was hard to discern which was which, but regardless, the sweetness was quite nice.

Buy It or Fly By It?  This was my first Rickland Orchards product and I've got to say that I enjoyed it very much and definitely give it a BUY IT rating.  The crunch alone makes this one worth the purchase, but the fact that its relatively ample size (for a snack bar) and the sweet and cooling factor of the cherries and yogurt  make this bar a total winner in my book.  One more note that I was thinking as I ate this was that if you stripped away the yogurt, this was pretty much exactly like a traditional KIND bar with its crunch, taste and even design of the packaging (clear packaging), although I have now seen KIND bars with yogurt as well.  Being that I find most KIND bars to be quite good, albeit small (much smaller than this), it was certainly something I appreciated.

BUY IT!!

  1. "Greek yogurt" is making its way into EVERYTHING! I bet next we are going to find Greek yogurt-filled Snickers, but more likely I see Greek yogurt-covered pretzels as the next thing.

  3. I love the greek yogurt bars. I bought a huge pack from Costco and they have the Blueberry kind as well. It's one of my favorite bars (next to LUNA and Clif).
