Review: SOYJOY Blueberry Baked Soy & Fruit Bar

As I start this review, I've got to admit that I was terrified to try this bar.  A "health" bar made of soybeans and fruit?  Ugh, not exactly a recipe for taste success in my mind, but I'm willing to try just about anything, even stuff I hate like bananas.  So, I picked up this Blueberry Baked Soy & Fruit Bar on sale at Meijer for $1.00, crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.  The bar itself weighs 1.05 ounces and has 140 calories and four grams of protein.  It's also all natural, so that's re-assuring for people that prefer natural foods.  That's clearly not the case for me with all the processed garbage that I eat for this blog, but I know it is for others, so there you go.

As the name implies, this bar is "baked" and that baking gives this a light and airy feel.  The exterior of the bar is hard, yet flaky which makes it almost as if it is a loaf of bread or a pie crust.  When I broke the bar open, I was greeted with a variety of different add-ins, which was shocking to me since all I was expecting to see was blueberries.  Instead, I was greeted with raisins and white chocolate chips and those were the only ones that I could visibly point out.  Reading the label, there were also dried pineapples, cranberries and coconut in here as well.  So, for such a tiny bar, there was a whole lot going on in here.  The wrapper said "Moister and Fruitier" and one thing I will point out is that when I broke this in half, the bar made a snapping sound because it was so hard and that did nothing to help the trepidation I had as I got ready for my first bite.  Where was the "moister" part of this equation?

After my first bite, all the trepidation and fear disappeared.  While this bar was hard on the outside, it really wasn't that bad as I chewed through it.  Its texture was kind of like that of a crunchy cookie.  In fact, not only did it crunch like a cookie, but it really did have that taste of a baked product as well.  I can't really do a better job describing a baked taste other than to say that you know that taste when you get it, so if you eat this bar, you'll know what I mean.  As for all the add-ins, I could clearly taste the blueberries and their flavor was strong in its tang and sweetness.  The raisins, etc. also added some nice sweetness into the bar as well, so this was like a sweet baked good.  One thing I could not taste, regrettably, were the white chocolate chips.  White chocolate is high on my list of favorite things and when I couldn't taste it, I was a little bit let down.  Still, not let down so much that it ruined the bar for me though.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I'm surprised to write this, but I've got to say BUY IT.  I actually enjoyed this bar quite a bit and I actually was glad I ate it after being so terrified.  It's a good, but not great bar, and I'd obviously recommend eating this one to anyone that is interested in trying something different or is on a big all natural food kick.  You really can't go wrong with this one.

BUY IT!!

  1. Nope...Have to disagree with you on this one. I ate these things for two solid weeks while trekking in Indonesia (the only power bar around)... they were ok...but nothing I would ever buy when there are o many other better options, like the cliff blueberry flavor.

It was just too dry and nothing special.

just my two cents though. I pretty much have agreed with EVERY other review of yours though

    1. I see your point, but I try (it doesn't always work that way if you read many of my reviews) to approach each review as if I'm in a vacuum and there are no other options to buy. In this "vacuum", I felt that the SOYJOY bar was worth a purchase. There are many other bars out there that are better, but I didn't want to compare it to the others.

    2. Ok. I see your "vacuum" (damn that is a hard word to spell) review process, and agree completely with you then. If you are looking at it by itself, with no other options then I understand.

Luckily we live in a place where there are more than enough alternatives.

Funny thing though, in Indonesia I say this bar in EVERY shop. I guess the brand is just real popular there.
