If you ever take a look at the Walden Farms website, you will notice that they have a TON of products. Since I am always looking for ways to "cheat" and eat things that contain no (or minimal) calories, there's a good chance that at some point I'm going to try every single thing that Walden Farms has to offer and I've done that many times already. The problem is that a lot of these products aren't available to purchase in my local grocery store, so that leads me to my first online food purchase from Amazon.com. Amazon sets up a portal for several retailers (in this case it was VitaCost.com) to market/sell their products and I picked up this twelve ounce container of Blueberry Fruit Spread via that portal for $4.49. That's more than I'd like to ordinarily spend for a Walden Farms product, but I was curious, so sue me.
As you can see from the photo, this one looks like a jelly. Well, duh, it is a fruit spread! Joking aside, there isn't a whole lot to talk about on this one other than it looks like jelly, jiggles like jelly and does all the things that you'd expect jelly to do. One thing that I did find odd was the amount of "loose" water that was cascading throughout this container and swishing around everywhere. It's just water and isn't going to hurt me (unless it's diseased of course), but riding the jelly analogy, I was certainly thinking to myself that jelly does not do what this was doing.
That said, I was willing to push on and give this one a taste and I was glad that I did. I've had the Strawberry Fruit Spread from Walden Farms before and while I found it to be a semi-reasonable approximation of strawberry jelly, it was still lacking something in taste. This Blueberry Fruit Spread, on the other hand, was not lacking anything at all. This in fact did taste very much like any blueberry product with its sweetness and flavor. I just used it as a dip, but I can't wait to try this out on toast, sandwiches, etc.
Buy It or Fly By It? Walden Farms did an excellent job with this one, so BUY IT. This is calorie free and sugar free, yet does a good job of replicating a real calorie-laden blueberry jelly/fruit spread, it's definitely worth a purchase/try. It may be a little costly, but sometimes when you are looking for ways to cut calories, you have to make the sacrifice.
BUY IT!! |
You should check out the sugar free options of preserves by smuckers. They only have 10 calories per tablespoon and are pretty good.
ReplyDeleteI've had them and they are pretty good. Don't know why I don't ever think to buy them though. It certainly would make more sense than paying out the nose for this Walden Farms stuff.
DeleteYa, this stuff is pretty good. I actually just had some this week. Thanks for the review!
