Review: Stonyfield Organic Oikos Superfruits 0% Fat Greek Yogurt

I've hit a lot of Greek yogurts on this blog, but this is review number one of any of the Stonyfield Greek yogurt products.  This is from their organic Oikos line and if anything is begging to be the inaugural review based on its name alone, it's this one, the Superfruits flavor from their Fruit on the Bottom version of their Oikos line.  I think I'm particularly super in my own mind, so it's only fitting that I do a review on this one.  I picked this one up at Kroger for $1.25 and it weighs in at 1.25 ounces with 130 calories and it has thirteen grams of protein.

So, what are Superfruits exactly (assuming you didn't read the packaging before this)?  Well, Superfruits are pomegrante, raspberry and acai.  All fruits that are high in antioxidants and supposedly healthy, according to studies.  When I ripped this one open, all I could notice was how watery it was.  Not a big deal, but an odd observation.  My second observation was that this may be the strongest smelling Greek yogurt that I've ever dealt with.  In fact, it was overpowering and it smelled like rotten cheese.  Watery and foul smelling...not exactly a great introduction to a new manufacturer for me. After that, I stirred the fruit up from the bottom and found that unlike most of these fruit "jams" that you see on the bottom of these fruit on the bottom yogurts, there were no bits of fruit.  It was just "jam" and that was it.  When the jam was mixed, the already watery yogurt stayed soupy and that was not expected.  So far, I wasn't exactly excited to take a bite out of this cup.

After my first bite, which was all yogurt and no "jam", I continued to be disappointed because the Greek yogurt taste was extremely strong and overpowering.  I don't particularly enjoy Greek yogurt on its own (I'm learning to like it more), so this was not a happy feeling for me.  After I mixed in some of the jam though, my opinion changed entirely.  The jam had a strong sweetness and that strong sweetness totally nullified the overpowering flavor of the Greek yogurt and actually made this into a sweet treat.  With each successive spoonful, I grew to like this sweet concoction even more and I went from hating this actually liking it.  It's not "super" but it is very solid.

Buy It or Fly By It?  From terrible to very solid in just a few spoonfuls.  That's got to be some sort of record for this blog and because of that (and also its taste, of course), I'll give this a BUY IT rating.  Despite its textural abnormalities, the late charge to go from bad to good in taste makes me anxious to try some other Stonyfield products to see if they follow the same pattern or stay either good or bad from beginning to end.

BUY IT!!

  1. I just have to ask if you have ever considered using plain greek yogurt and flavoring it yourself with fruit, nuts/nutspreads, syrups, honey and the like? I do all the time I even put it with cereal or in oatmeal to up the protein and it makes it super creamy! You can also use it in savory things like to thicken soups, make sauces or in place of sour cream and mayo.

I recommend the lowfat cabot if you can find it or the 0% Fage. I am not a fan of okios or athenos because they seem runny to me and more sour bitter as opposed to tart

    1. I certainly have considered it, but I'm just too lazy to actually follow through and do it. :)
