Review: Quaker Popped Apple Cinnamon Rice Snacks

Editor's Note:  While the product has stayed the same, Quaker now markets these under a different named and they are now called "Quaker Popped Rice Snacks" (new packaging is above) The review below applies the same.

I'll admit it...there are some of these Quakes flavors that I've been holding out on reviewing.  I want to get through the riff-raff flavors and only spread some special flavors throughout the riff-raff so that they have that much more meaning.  Is this one of those instances?.  Let's find out.  These Quaker Quakes Apple Cinnamon rice snacks are 120 calories per serving (about three per bag) and I purchased them on sale at Meijer for $1.00.

Now, before I review this, I will say that apples and cinnamon are two of my favorite things in the world, so I have high expectations on this one.  There is nothing better than throwing some apples in a saute pan along with some cinnamon and letting them simmer to the point that the apples are soft and infused with cinnamon.  It's a beautiful combination and Quaker's attempt to put this into Quake form should be right up my ally.

First, we'll address the texture of these as we always do.  Using my previous system of description of a Quake being either "powdery" or "plastic", I would say these fall in the "plastic" category since they have a hard and weighty exterior.  As you can see in the picture, there's also little brown burst spread throughout the exterior and these make up the cinnamon flavor.  The apple flavoring is in the coating and in the snack as well.

When you bite into these, you'll see that those cinnamon bursts are perfectly proportioned with the apple flavoring of the coating and crunch of the snack.  They cinnamon is not overpowering, but it is a nice, subtle compliment to the apple flavoring.  The apple flavoring, while not strong, is clearly there and you can definitely taste it and that is a good thing.  The apples and cinnamon in these Quakes are a wonderful combination and an acceptable substitute for the warm mix of the real thing.

Buy It or Fly By It?  If it wasn't obvious already, definitely BUY IT.  This is one of my two favorite flavors in the Quakes line (Caramel Corn being the other) and if I wasn't some a frugal dork, I would pay full price for these.  Since I am frugal though, I read the ads every week to see when these are on sale and when they are, I go in and buy a ton of them.  I would highly advise that you do the same.

BUY IT!!

  1. Belive it or not, I just recently discovered they serve these (but I think another flavor) in little snack sizes, when flying Jet Blue...

a huge upgrade from the standard bag of generic nuts or pretzles option most airlines serve.
