Review: Ben & Jerry's Cheesecake Brownie Ice Cream

Ben & Jerry's always comes up with new flavors.  That sentence really has no bearing on this review at all other than to say that there will continue to be a lot of Ben & Jerry's reviews here because I like to try new foods and I want to be as comprehensive as possible on this site.  Because of that, I'm led to the Cheesecake Brownie flavor of Ben & Jerry's premium ice cream.  Cheesecake is something that I do like, but don't eat often and having had Culver's various incarnations of cheesecake custard and not being particularly impressed by it, I was wondering if those same feelings would carry over to Ben & Jerry's attempt.  Cheesecake Brownie is 250 calories per serving (four per pint) and I picked this one up at Meijer on sale for $3.00.

Ben & Jerry's describes this flavor as "Cheesecake Ice Cream with Cheesecake Brownie Chunks" and as you can see from the picture above, that is definitely the case.  I've mixed it up a bit from testing it out, but the cheesecake ice cream is a vibrant white, just like your typical cheesecake that you'd pick up at the store or make at home (As a side note, I've made a cheesecake from scratch the old fashioned way using water baths, etc. and I have a word of advice for you:  just buy it at the store.  It's nice to say you've done it once, but they take FOREVER to make and it's just so much easier to get on at the store.  Anyway...).  The brownie chunks while not huge or particularly plentiful are fairly sized and intermittently spread throughout the pint.  There were a decent amount of them, I guess, but I wish there were more of them since I'm an add-in guy when it comes to ice cream, but I'll live.

As I took my first spoonful (ice cream only to test the cheesecake taste), I thought to myself that this did have the nice tart and creamy taste of an actual cheesecake.  It wasn't a particularly strong taste, but it was strong enough that you clearly knew you were eating cheesecake ice cream and not vanilla ice cream.  As for the brownie chunks, well, they were about what you'd expect.  They were chewy and soft, but not really anything to stop traffic for or scream from a mountaintop about.  They were fine, but kind of boring.

Buy It or Fly By It?  While this wasn't a bad ice cream, I would say to FLY BY IT.  Frankly, this was a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) type of ice cream in the fact that it was just boring and really brought nothing spectacular to the table.  If someone put this in front of my face and said "EAT", I would happily do it, but I would do it knowing there are so many better flavors out there.  If you are a cheesecake freak or have a craving, this might be worth a purchase to you, but if not, try something else.

FLY BY IT!!

For a second opinion, check out the review at On Second Scoop.  Dubba thinks less of this one than I do, although he agrees that the cheesecake flavor is just there and this is just boring.

  1. oh man, that was one of my first reviews... scary that my point still holds true 4 years later: this one is way more boring then it should be. Thanks for the link as always!

    1. No problem. I always love to check out your reviews after I finish writing mine to see if I'm crazy about how I feel about a product or not. Funny thing is that you and I agree seemingly 90% of the time, so seeing someone else agree with me makes me feel "normal" and not "crazy", so to speak.

  2. I personally am addicted to this stuff! (along with B&J's Strawberry Cheesecake) But I'm also a complete dairy addict; so for me, the math is simple:
Cheesecake + Chocolate + Ice cream = Come to Mama! :)

I'm also a very simplistic person when it comes to ice cream. I love the creamy texture, and for me, too many competing flavors or mix-in's ruin it.

I'm actually in the process of taking off baby weight from my last pregnancy, and B&J's Cheesecake Brownie & B&J's Strawberry Cheesecake are the only things on my cheat list (along with the occasional veggie pizza - yum!). I've been in search of a low-fat/ fat free version, but so far, no luck (hint hint - if you find any, let me know! lol!)

Anyways, thanks for the review. I'm excited to read some more of your blog :)

  3. the chocolate brownie was indeed chocolate...but the ice cream tasted like plain nothing, no cheese cake at all, not even vanilla. Certainly wouldn't by it again.
