Review: Promax Chocolate Peanut Crunch Bar

In my previous Promax review, I reviewed one of their "LS" (low sugar) line of bars.  This time, I'm looking at one of the full power Promax bars in this review of the Chocolate Peanut Crunch bar.  This one is all natural, gluten free and vegetarian, which considering this is a protein bar, sort of surprises me.  The packaging also proclaims that this can be eaten post workout, as a meal replacement or as an on-the-go snack.  Sometimes I find those claims to be funny, but that's why I test these things out.  Speaking of funny packaging, as you can see this bar is labeled as a "Great Tasting Energy Bar."  I guess I'll be testing that too. Anyway, I picked this up on sale at Meijer for $1.50 and it clocks in at a very large 2.64 ounces with 300 calories and twenty grams of protein.

As the picture portrays, this one is started out with the typical gummy protein base core.  By appearances, it would seem that core is primarily a peanut butter flavor.  The core is then surrounded by a thick layer of chocolate and then topped with peanuts that are spread liberally throughout the chocolate topping.  They certainly don't screw you over on the number of peanuts and for a bar that carries "Crunch" in the title, I would certainly hope that would be the case.  One thing that I very much noticed is that as soon as I unwrapped this bar from its packaging, the smell of peanuts was quite strong and that made me pretty anxious to bite into this.

Remember what I said about the protein base appearing to be a peanut butter flavor?  Well, I was wrong as the flavor of the base is more chocolate than anything.  That's not a bad thing, it was just strange to taste that when I was expecting something else.  The base was chewy and the chocolate flavor, while not strong, was noticeable.  The chocolate exterior was not sweet, but was thick/hearty in its taste.  Its heartiness wasn't overpowering, but you could definitely tell it was there as it felt like it was carrying extra weight.  I know that's a bizarre way to describe it, but that's the best I can do...I ain't no Pulitzer Prize winner.  The peanuts also added a nice crunch and taste to the bar, but they weren't nearly as crunchy as I would have expected.  Still, they added enough crunch for this one to be deserving of having the word "Crunch" in its name.

Buy It or Fly By It?  While this is not a great tasting bar like the packaging proclaims, it is a good tasting bar and for that reason, I give it a BUY IT rating.  It's a hearty bar too, so in this case the packaging is correct because it would be great for a post workout builder, meal replacement or on-the-go snack.  I've got to say that I was expecting the worst when I first saw this, but it actually turned out to be pretty good.

BUY IT!!
