Review: Quaker Popped Ranch Rice Snacks

Editor's Note:  While the product has stayed the same, Quaker now markets these under a different named and they are now called "Quaker Popped Rice Snacks." The review below applies the same.

Quaker Oats has a line of mini-rice cakes that they market under the "Quakes" product name.  There are several different varieties, but for these purposes, we'll focus on the Quaker Quakes Ranch Rice Snacks.  I'm not a big fan of ranch flavored items myself, but I was willing to give these a shot in order to add some variety to the otherwise bland life of mine.  At 130 calories per serving (there's three servings in a standard size bag), it's not a big caloric hit either, so that made me even more inclined to give them a try.  I got this at Meijer on sale for about $1.00.

As you can see above, these are a small version of every dieter's rice cakes dream (or nightmare, depending on how you approach it).  For those of you old enough or privileged enough to see a silver dollar in your lifetime, I would say that these mini-cakes are each about 10% larger than a silver dollar.  Much like their big   brother rice cakes, they are airy and lightweight.  The only difference is that these cakes are covered in the ranch powder that you would find in a Ranch salad dressing mix.  I don't know how they got the powder to stick, but I'm reasonably certain that it wasn't glue.

Anyway, in terms of taste, they taste pretty much like rice cakes covered in powdered ranch salad dressing mix.  There's nothing special about them, but they do have that peppery bite that ranch dressing does possess.  The only thing missing is the creaminess and I can't really say that it really detracts at all.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I would say to BUY IT.  Like I said previously, I don't ordinarily like ranch flavoring, but in this case, I did like it and will definitely be picking these up again when they are on sale (stores sell these at any price range from $0.75 to $2.00 per bag).

BUY IT!!
That said, make sure you do have some fluid nearby to drink while you are eating these, because these will dry your mouth out pretty quickly.

  1. Quakes rock! I love these...my favorite are the cheddar cheese and chocolate flavors. I'm not a big fan of ranch at all, but you have got to try the chocolate ones if you like these. They taste like breakfast cereal (like Cocoa Puffs!). The new website is really a great idea, looking forward to seeing your reviews.

  2. Kayleigh, I've had all the flavors on their website but one, so you'll see reviews for all those coming in due time. Keep coming to the website and they are bound to pop up in the future.

    Thanks for visiting and commenting!
