Review: Chobani Cinnamon Pear Blended Greek Yogurt

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't had a lot of experience in my life eating pears.  Not because I dislike them or anything, but because it's just one of those fruits that never has really been in my house as either a child or adult.  So, when Chobani released a limited batch Greek Yogurt that included pears and cinnamon, which I have eaten a ton of, I was kinda curious to add another review to the Chobani collection.  So, I picked up this single serving container of Chobani Cinnamon Pear Blended Greek Yogurt at Meijer for $1.09 and each 5.3 ounce cup is made up of 140 calories and twelve grams of protein.  It's also got 2% milkfat and is all natural, gluten free, kosher and vegetarian, so there is all that as well.

It's obvious that when you look at the name of this product, there's going to be some Greek yogurt in there and some cinnamon in there.  When I see "Blended" in the name, I typically don't expect there to be any chunks of pears in there because "Blended" typically means "Obliterated" in my experience.  Much to my surprise, there were some semi-decent sized chunks of pear spread throughout this cup of extremely creamy Greek yogurt, so that was nice.  What I didn't expect and was actually horrified by as I read the ingredients is the inclusion of "Locust Bean Gum."  Umm...yeah, that doesn't exactly sound appetizing.  I'm sure it's been in a lot of products that I've eaten because it's one of those unmentionable, but necessary, types of ingredients, but just seeing it there made my stomach turn a bit.  As for the rest of the container, it had a slight smell of cinnamon, so that was a win.

My first spoonful of this creamy Greek yogurt was primarily just the yogurt itself and not the pear add-ins.  The yogurt was blended with the cinnamon and it provided a nice little tart taste with a hint of heat from the cinnamon at the end.  Not a lot of heat, but enough to make me know that I was eating cinnamon.  That heat did sort of cancel out the tartness of the Greek yogurt too, so that gives an idea of how strong it was.  Next was a spoonful with the pear pieces and those pieces brought some slight sweetness to the spoonful that was punctuated by the mild cinnamon heat at the very end.  When all wrapped together, this was a slight amount of tart, sweet and spice.  It hit on a lot of different profiles.

Buy It or Fly By It?  It hit on a lot of flavor profiles and it hit them well in a pleasing, but not overpowering way.  Since it did so well, I give this a BUY IT rating and can say that I genuinely enjoyed this entire mix.  It's a limited batch and since it is limited, I don't know how long it'll be around.  If you find it, it's worth snatching up.

BUY IT!!

  1. yea, when i hear "locust" i think bugs.. but i guess locust bean gum is from a vegetable. so, it's not as bad as it sounds, lol. i've never been a big pear person, either. i do like them, but the thought of pears in yogurt weirds me out for some reason.
