Review: Edy's (Dreyer's) Grand Cinnamon Bun Fun! Ice Cream

We are getting close to wrapping up summer (it was in the 50s here yesterday morning!) and for the most part, I've done a decent job staying away from ice cream this summer compared to prior summers.  Now, chocolate chip cookies are something entirely different, but that's a story for a different day.  Anyway, a recent sale and coupon at Marsh (along with a chance at more Marsh Monopoly game pieces) prompted me to add to my Edy's review collection and pick up this 1.5 quart container of Edy's (Dreyer's) Grand Cinnamon Bun Fun! Ice Cream for $3.00 (with coupon).  It's a limited edition out of their "Bakery Treats" line, so I'm not sure how long this will actually be out there (it might be gone from most places already!).  Each container has twelve servings and each half-cup size serving is 160 calories, so it's not terribly bad from a caloric perspective.

As the container identifies, this contains "Vanilla ice cream with a rich cinnamon bun swirl."  As you can see, that's clearly the base.  There's the off-white vanilla ice cream and mixed within that is the cinnamon bun swirl.  Unfortunately, there really aren't any chunks of cinnamon bun and that was kind of a downer as I was hoping for that chewy component to go along with this, similar to the DELICIOUS Ben & Jerry's flavor like this.  As for the rest of the presentation, the ice cream didn't really smell like something and it was somewhat thin.  The swirl did carry a very strong scent of cinnamon though, as I would have expected.

First to taste was the vanilla ice cream and it was pretty basic stuff.  Some vanilla flavor, but not overly potent.  Kind of boring actually, to be honest.  Next up was tasting the swirl and boy oh boy, it packed a lot of cinnamon punch and spice to it.  It was moderately gooey, but the real story here was how much heat that cinnamon had.  I really did not expect that.  Fortunately, when mixed with the vanilla ice cream, this cooled down a bit.  It didn't cool down enough to completely eliminate the spice as that was very much still there, but it did make it a bit easier to take.  Since there were no add-ins to speak of, there really isn't much else to say here.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I'm on the fence with this one.  It was a somewhat reasonable approximation of a cinnamon bun, but the chunks of doughy bun being missing really made me question whether I liked this or not.  The swirl definitely emulated the namesake and the vanilla ice cream was just a delivery mechanism, but I'm not really sure this reminded me of cinnamon buns.  To me, it was just vanilla ice cream with a cinnamon swirl.  That said, it was decent enough that I'll give this a tepid BUY IT rating.  If you love that cinnamon flavor, you'll love this.  If you are looking for something like cinnamon buns, you'll still have a bit more desire.  Despite liking this in general, I was still left wanting more.

BUY IT!!
