Review: Balance Chocolate Balance Bites

Every now and then the Kroger Free Friday Download promotion will provide a free product that I legitimately get excited about.  Recently, one of those products popped up and I was eager to run to Kroger to grab a bag of these Balance Chocolate Balance Bites at my local store.  I've reviewed plenty of Balance products, but these Bites are something that I've not only never seen, but I've also never heard of before.  That's what got me excited, so I hurriedly grabbed this 1.48 ounce bag of "Bites."  The bag consists of one serving and that serving clocks in at 190 calories with thirteen grams of protein.  It's also gluten free energy, so hooray for that.

I wasn't sure what to expect with these prior to grabbing them at Kroger, but what I got was something that was essentially Cocoa Puffs cereal in look, feel and smell.  Small chocolate balls that could be used anywhere, which is a main selling point on the Balance website as it states "These crispy, crunchy, pop-in-your-mouth bites are perfect for on the go snacking, in a bowl of milk or even on top of frozen yogurt."  I was expecting something like a chocolate covered candy, so when I got was essentially a cereal, I wasn't really excited any longer.  If I had to differentiate these in any way from Cocoa Puffs cereal, I guess I'd say that these had more of a glossy coating.  Yeah, that's pretty thin, but it's all I got.

My review of the flavor is going to be pretty thin too because all I can really say is that these were essentially a snack sized bag of Cocoa Puffs in terms of taste as well.  The glossy exterior made them a bit less dry than Cocoa Puffs, so I guess that helps them be a standalone snack, but the flavor is basically a carbon copy of the cereal.  Dense chocolate surrounded by an airy puff.  That's it.  I didn't try these with milk or yogurt, but I'd imagine the experience would be much the same.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I didn't look at the actual retail price of these, but I'm guessing that a box of Cocoa Puffs is less expensive and being that it can give you nearly the identical experience (minus the amount of protein), I'd just stick with buying Cocoa Puffs and save yourself from the big wallet it.  It's not that these were awful, they were just boring and combined with the wallet hit, these get a FLY BY IT rating.  It's a nice idea for a product, I suppose, but there's got to be something more to make someone want to make a purchase past their initial curiosity purchase.  I just don't see a reason go go past that here.

FLY BY IT!!
