Sometimes a product name can be intriguing. That was the case with BumbleBar products and it's why I picked up a couple of these at Fresh Thyme for reviews. I've already looked at one and was decidedly unimpressed, but since I bought two, I was on the hook for another review and that's why we are here today to take a look at this BumbleBar Chocolate Crisp Organic Energy Bar that I grabbed for $1.89 This one is organic, gluten free and vegan friendly and clocks in at 1.4 ounces. Within that is 190 calories and five grams of protein.
I've been busy lately, so I'll just "borrow" BumbleBar's description from their website: "Suymptuous chocolate enrobes crisp brown rice, seasme seeds, and peanuts for a bar that's sufficiently luscious to satisfy a chocolate craving or a discerning sweet tooth." I think what's most amazing about that description is that BumbleBar lacks a copy editor for their website since they misspelled the very first word in the description. I'm guessing that's supposed to be "Sumptuous" but I'm not going to put words in their mouth (or website). Anyway, the bar was light and airy and last time I compared one of their bars to Styrofoam. I'm going to have to use that comparison again.
I think I can keep hammering the Styrofoam comparison again on the flavor, because it really applies. This tasted like Styrofoam with a mild hint of dark chocolate and some saltiness from the sesame sees, sea salt and peanuts that were in the mix. Still, it wasn't enough to overcome the Styrofoam-esque texture and flavor, that's not exactly a good thing. I will say this though...the dark chocolate did have a dense texture/feeling to it, so at least that put some "coating" onto the Styrofoam. I guess, if I had to reach, that would be a compliment.
Buy It or Fly By It? This is an easy one. Styrofoam flavor = bad. Since this bar had that flavor, it gets a FLY BY IT rating and that makes BumbleBar 0-for-2 on this blog, which is sad because their products do support a good cause. For every bar that is purchased, a portion of the proceeds go to aid the construction of schools in Ethiopia, so while I am all for helping Ethiopia and the less privileged, I'm not all for eating this bar. Shucks.
