Review: Haagen-Dazs Honey Milk Chocolate Graham Gelato Bars

If you have been a regular reader of the blog (however sparse my posts have been recently), you may have noticed that I've gotten away from dessert-type reviews.  A lot of that has helped me drop a few unwanted pounds in 2015, but sometimes the old sweet tooth just kicks in and when that is paired with a coupon that gets me a killer deal, I just can't resist picking up something decidedly unhealthy and very dessert-y at the store.  That led me to add to my Haagen-Dazs review collection as a $2.00 off store coupon allowed me to pick up a box of three Haagen-Dazs Honey Milk Chocolate Graham Gelato Bars at Kroger for $1.99.  What a deal!  Anyway, each bar in the box is 3.0 ounces and packs a decidedly unhealthy 280 calories.  But hey, it's dessert...dessert is rarely healthy.

I could do my best trying to describe what you see in the photo above, but I think the Haagen-Dazs website does so much better than I could ever do, so I'll let them take it:  "meet Haagen-Dazs ice cream’s Italian cousin, gelato. golden ribbons of honey in creamy honey gelato, enrobed in rich milk chocolate and graham cracker pieces. Haagen-Dazs gelato bars. inspired by Italy and made like no other."  There you go.  I can add to this that these bars were fairly bulky and did have a nice chocolate smell to them, so that was encouraging.

Biting into this bar provided a nice little snap of crunch at the beginning with the brittle, rich and sweet milk chocolate shell.  That was quite nice.  The graham cracker pieces within that milk chocolate shell also made for some nice crunch too, which was a nice contrast to the soft and creamy honey gelato and the gooey (but slim) ribbons of honey within that gelato.  In terms of flavor, the gelato and ribbons had mild hints of honey with honey's richness and bite, but the flavor was overpowering in any way.  In fact, the milk chocolate shell was the real star in this bar as it's sweetness, richness and melting qualities overtook the entire bar.  The softness of the gelato and added sweetness/richness of the honey were just a complimentary, but noticeable, player in the grand scheme of this bar.

Buy It or Fly By It?  The honey in this bar was a modest component when I expected it to be more of a star, but that was just fine with me as this was still a very tasty bar.  That earns this a clear BUY IT rating.  I love chocolate and I especially love milk chocolate, so something that represents that is clearly something that I'm going to enjoy and that was definitely the case with this bar.  These bars might be a tad expensive at the normal price to pick up on a regular basis, but if you are armed with a coupon or making the occasional purchase, I would strongly encourage you to pick these up for your enjoyment.

BUY IT!!
