Review: PowerBar Performance Energy Chocolate Peanut Butter Wafer Bar

I mentioned in my last PowerBar review that it was their first review in quite some time on the blog after a long absence.  That review was of one of their new wafer bar products and since it appears they introduced two new flavors (at least that's what's available in my local Kroger), today's review is of the other flavor (a basic flavor combination at that, but hey, it's a review) with this look at the PowerBar Performance Energy Chocolate Peanut Butter Wafer Bar that I picked up for $1.00.  This before and during exercise stage bar comes in at 1.41 ounces and has 170 calories (the website says 180; I love it when the website and the wrapper differ...who should I believe?) and a minuscule three grams of protein.

Having review the last wafer bar, I new what this one would look like going into it.  It is a wafer exterior with multiple layers of wafer and chocolate peanut butter mix.  The wafer itself is brittle, but the chocolate peanut butter mix made this surprisingly resistant to getting broken in half for the photo.  As far as the smell, it had quite a strong smell of SOMETHING and I didn't expect that.  I call it something because I couldn't really distinguish whether that smell was chocolate or peanut butter.  It was an amalgamation of both that really didn't identify itself in any way.  Odd, but whatever.

I'll comment first on the texture of this and what I experienced after my first bite.  What I got was a unsurprisingly brittle wafer and then a surprisingly gummy interior.  That gummy interior was chewy and a bit tougher than I ever would have expected.  I suppose that texture worked with a brittle and crunchy wafer as that allowed it to have to different experiences.  As far as flavor, the wafer was not really noticeable, but it did taste like a baked good, if that means anything.  The chocolate peanut butter mix was kind of like the smell...it was an amalgamation of chocolate and peanut butter and neither of them really stood out.  It wasn't bad and it wasn't good, it just existed.  I suppose I could say I tasted hints of both chocolate and peanut butter, but I had to strain to do so.

Buy It or Fly By It?  If I had to describe this bar in one word, the word I would use is "edible."  Edible doesn't earn glowing recommendations in most cases, but in this case, I'll give it a BUY IT rating.  It could be worse, I suppose.  The only thing notable about this boring bar and (boring?) review was that my mind will somehow not let me type out the word "wafer" without first misspelling it as "wafter".  This is a recurring problem for me as it has happened in other reviews using that word.  To put it in perspective, I think out of all the times I used the word in this review (ten times), I only typed it correctly on the first try once without having to go back and correct it.  It's a bizarre and irritating mental block.

BUY IT!!
