I've lamented previously that reviewing all sorts of yogurt products bugs me because of expiration dates. It often forces me to review things when I really don't feel like it because they product could bad. On the other hand, sometimes expiration dates help out. For example, I can buy a product in a binge shopping purchase and know that I have quite a while before I need to get to it. Today's review is one of those instances. I bought this single serving cup of Yoplait Greek 100 Strawberry Cheesecake Greek Yogurt a few weeks ago, but because of the expiration date, I was able to hold off adding to my Yoplait review catalog until today's review (the expiration date finally caught up with me). I picked this up for $1.00 at Kroger and based on the product's name, this 5.3 ounce cup is obviously 100 calories and within those 100 calories are twelve grams of gluten free Greek protein. For those readers that are so included to use the Weight Watchers points system, this one also counts as two points on that scale.
Prior to tearing the cover off of this, I wasn't expecting much going in. Despite being named after one of the more decadent desserts around, I fully expected this to just be a slightly pink-colored Greek yogurt and that was it. Well, I was partially right. The Greek yogurt was pinkish but me being right ended there. What I did not expect and was ultimately nice to see were some small chunks of strawberry that were spread throughout this (that's one on the rim of the cup in the picture above). I've got to admit, that was a nice little bonus and the fact that I am treating this as a bonus shows that it's really not difficult to please me. Anyway, the rest of this cup was pretty much as I expected as it had aromas of both strawberry, cheesecake and also that Greek yogurt smell, although none of them were particularly potent.
Despite my glee (I'm overstating a bit there) at having the strawberry chunks present in the cup, they really didn't do anything for the flavor, not that I'm insulting this in anyway. It delivered exactly like I would have expected it to in that it had flavors of strawberry and cheesecake spread throughout, but much like the smell of this, neither of those flavors were particularly potent. They were just there. As for the typical Greek yogurt tartness and tang, it was actually missing from this and it was just a semi-creamy, mildly flavored cup of Strawberry Cheesecake. I will point out that what cheesecake flavor there was though kind of came in as an aftertaste as the strawberry led off the way the flavor made it's way through my taste buds.
Buy It or Fly By It? I really can't say anything negative about this and since this delivered in a nice and safe way, I'll give this a BUY IT rating. This was just a solid performer that delivered as I expected it would and that makes it a winner in my book. It's also a low calorie way to at least quench some of an appetite for the real strawberry cheesecake, so that is definitely a nice option/benefit as well.
