I think I've mentioned in previous coffee-flavored product reviews that when it comes to trips to Starbucks or any other type of coffee shop, I'm pretty boring and usually just get the standard coffee. Because of that, I don't think I've ever had a caramel macchiato drink in my life. I've had food products that have that flavor profile that I've reviewed here, but never the actual drink itself. So, with that basis (or lack thereof depending on how you look at it), today takes me to another Dannon review with this look at a 5.3 ounce cup of Dannon Oikos Caramel On Top Caramel Macchiato Greek Yogurt that I picked up on sale at Kroger for $1.00. Each cup is 210 calories and ten grams of protein.
Being that this one has "Caramel On Top" in the product name, it should come as no surprise that the first thing I saw when I opened this up was a strong and rich smelling caramel. The only thing about the caramel that was somewhat disappointing was that it was runnier than I would have expected, but I suppose that's okay. Beneath that caramel was the macchiato flavored yogurt that had a mild coffee smell and had a slightly tan coloring to imply the coffee inclusion into the standard Greek yogurt. In terms of thickness, it was middle-of-the-road, meaning that it didn't lean toward being thick or runny. It was just average compared to some of the other Greek yogurts that I've tried out in the history of this blog.
For my first taste, I attacked the caramel on top first and while runny, it was extremely rich and had very strong caramel flavor. When I say rich, I don't mean that it was sugary, but instead that it had what I'll call full body and definitely was not shy about its flavor, if that makes sense. Next, I went for the macchiato flavored Greek yogurt and it had a nice, mild flavor of coffee to it. That coffee flavor nearly cancelled out what is typical tartness of Greek yogurt, although there was still a little bite at the end. When I mixed the two together, this was a blend of flavors that I'll call unique that took a couple of spoonfuls to grow on me, although I will point out that I could taste both flavors individually, even when they were mixed. Once it did grow on me though, I craved more and more and when I finally cleaned out the cup, I was craving the flavor so much that I nearly licked it out to get out all last remnants.
Buy It or Fly By It? If something has such a taste that it makes me consider licking out a container, it's pretty obvious that it deserves a BUY IT rating. The richness of the caramel was tamed by the bitterness (mild) of coffee flavor and this ended up making a nice blend of what I'd imagine the drink tastes like if I ever actually ventured out of my norm and got one. I will say one thing however...if you are not a coffee person or don't particularly care for rich foods, I would stay away from this one because it has both of those characteristics/flavors in abundance.
