Review: Chobani Oats Cranberry Greek Yogurt With Steel-Cut Oats

When I was losing weight a several years ago at a meteoric pace, one of my favorite treats was to make a bowl of oatmeal and then mix some yogurt in with the oatmeal to make a convoluted parfait of sorts.  When I was recently strolling through Meijer, they had a free sample station set up where they were passing out a new Chobani product that seemed to be emulating the same thing that I used to make on my own, so I grabbed a couple of cups of it up and that leads me to to another Chobani review, this time with my look at this single serving cup of Chobani Oats Cranberry Greek Yogurt With Steel-Cut Oats that I was able to pick up for $1.25.  Each cup is 5.3 ounces and has 160 calories and ten grams of protein.

As you can see, this cup of Greek yogurt starts out by carrying on the cranberry appearance with a pinkish colored, fairly thick yogurt.  Within that yogurt is a fair amount of oatmeal and the occasional cranberry bits.  The yogurt itself had a nice cranberry smell emanating from it as well along with a mix of that standard Greek yogurt smell.  All in all, it was presented about what I'd expect it to be like and that was a good start as it could have gone the way of being way to watery or way to foul smelling.  This cup was not that.

This one looked about like I would have expected and that was the same way with the taste.  The cranberry flavor was definitely present and brought a degree of sweetness and tang to each spoonful.  That tang mixed with the usual, but not overpowering, tartness of the Chobani Greek yogurt that made for an interesting mix of sweet, tart and tang that almost made my lips pucker up like I was eating a lemon or lime after each spoonful.  On top of that, the oatmeal brought a much needed alternate textural element to the cup that broke up the creamy yogurt and gave it almost a grainy (albeit a wet graininess) to the entire package.  One thing of note that I wasn't particularly excited about was that this yogurt seemed kind of dry.  It didn't ruin anything about this for me, but it was interesting.

Buy It or Fly By It?  I wasn't the biggest fan of the fact that this seemed a bit dry or that the flavor made my lips pucker up a bit, but those in no way should detract from the fact that this is deserving of a BUY IT rating.  While not outstanding, this is a tasty treat and does a solid job of reminding me of one my old go-to meals while I was dropping massive amounts of weight in the past.

BUY IT!!

    1. I had grown to an obscenely unhealthy weight (350+ pounds) and needed to drop weight not only for health reasons, but also for emotional ones. Fortunately, I caught the weight early and dropped it all prior to developing health problems.

  2. You should try the honey flavored one. My second favorite is the apple and cinnamon -- both are delicious. I'm surprised that so far I have only found these at Safeway -- have looked at other grocery stores to no avail...
