Perhaps MET-Rx has figured out that most of their bars are mammoth-sized as my prior reviews have shown and have finally figured out that in order to expand to more markets, they should shrink the size and calorie counts of their products (cleaner and leaner as the product packaging says). I was strolling through Kroger recently and I noticed that they now have a new (to me) line of shrunken down bars with this MET-Rx Prime Strawberries & Cream Protein Bar that I was able to pick up on sale for $1.67. This smaller bar comes in at a much lighter 2.29 ounces and has substantially less calories with only 200 calories and still a protein-packed twenty grams of protein. It's gluten free too, so they are also able to reach that market as well.
As you can see, there's not a lot to look at with this bar. To be honest, I was expecting more. That said, the relative boredom that this bar provides with its look shouldn't really matter in the end if it tastes good, right? Anyway, it was just a tan blob of sticky bar with little bits of strawberry mixed into that blob. I will say that the blob did do a good job of having the smells of both strawberry and cream coming off of it, so MET-Rx did do a good job of presenting the named flavors from an aromatic perspective.
As I took my first bite, I have to admit that this was a little tough. After a couple of chews though, it softened up. I found that to be strange since the bar itself was somewhat pliable. As for the rest of the texture, it was just basically all the same. Chewy and gummy...that's about it. As for the flavor of the bar, it did deliver on what it promised. There were mild flavors of both strawberry and cream (just like the mild smell) that really flattened out and dissipated at the end of each bite. Neither of them particularly stuck out, but both were present and that's really all I can ask for. What I didn't ask for and didn't receive (thankfully) was the metallic taste that I've found in previous MET-Rx bars. That lack of that taste was nice and very much appreciated.
Buy It or Fly By It? This bar was nearly bland, but it had just enough strawberry and cream flavor to make it enticing to me. For that reason, I'll give this a BUY IT rating. I didn't expect to do that going in as I was terrified of this, quite frankly. In the end, this ended up being a decent enough product that I would eat it again, especially if I was looking for a protein punch and/or meal replacement.
