Review: Elisabeth Hasselbeck's NoGii Peanut Butter & Chocolate No Gluten High Protein Bar

If I were ever so inclined to start a nutrition bar company, which I don't think I ever will be, I already know what the first flavor that I will put out will be.  It's perhaps the easiest flavor combination there as it appeals to a large majority of the population.  I would equate it to an empty net goal in hockey.  All you have to do is aim in right (or produce the bar in the food manufacturing example) and you are going to score (or produce revenue).  If you haven't figured out what I'm talking about yet, look no further than the name of today's review topic as I'll be taking a look at this Elisabeth Hasselbeck's NoGii Peanut Butter & Chocolate No Gluten High Protein Bar.  Peanut butter and chocolate...about as simple as you can get and it appeals to TONS of people out there.  Not very creative, but why do you need to be creative when something works?  Pointless rambling aside, I picked this one up to add to my review collection at Marsh for $2.49 and it comes in at 1.93 ounces.  It's also got 230 calories and twenty grams of gluten free high protein.

I took this one out of the wrapper and from a visual perspective, there wasn't a lot of mystery since the packaging did all the work for me.  I can happily report that the bar looked just like the picture on the wrapper which I guess is a win since that is often not the case with any sort of food product (think cheeseburgers at fast food places; they NEVER look like they do in the ads or menus).  What did strike me once I took this one out was the overpowering smell of peanut butter, which as a deep admirer of peanut butter as I've stated on this blog too many times to remember, I very much appreciated that.  As for the bar itself, it was a chocolate base layer topped with the typical soy crisps.  Within that soy crisp mix was peanut butter, as I'd expect.  The bar was then topped with a chocolate swirl and also a little bit of a peanut butter swirl as well.  It was hard to see at first and mostly unnoticeable in my pictures, but I can attest that there was also peanut butter on top of this bar.  In my mind, the more peanut butter there is, the better the chances something have of being good.

As I bit into this, it had the texture that I expected.  Soft and airy chew with the chocolate and peanut butter melting to make it all stick together.  In terms of the flavor, the peanut butter was quite dense and provided some "weight" to this bar while the chocolate came in with a mild hit of sweetness that made this both dense and decadent.  Considering that this is a HIGH protein bar, I guess it's probably a good thing that this one was so bulky since that's what people that are eating high protein foods are typically looking for.  All in all though, this was pretty much like I'd expect a peanut butter and chocolate bar to taste.

Buy It or Fly By It?  Nothing about this bar really stood out, but it was still a solid performer and deserving of a BUY IT rating.  If you are looking for a heavy protein bar, the protein level in this bar may be a little low for the price compared to some of the MET-Rx or serious protein bars out there.  If you are looking for a decent snack or light meal that happens to have a bit of protein to it, this is a more than viable option.

BUY IT!!

  1. I personally like the Chocolate Mint flavor a lot, although it doesn't nearly sell as good as the pb & choc
